Pregnant after IF

I'm coming out of hiding

I've been MIA since the fall, when we lost our little man, but I'm sure some of you remember me. (I need to clean up my siggy, it's a mess. I will work on that!)

Anyway, we started trying again in December with the RE and we were extremely fortunate to get pregnant again on our first IUI cycle. Given my scary history this pregnancy has me as nervous as I can get. I just hit 13 weeks today and so far baby looks great. I had a scare on the 8th and they rushed me over to the hospital and put my cerclage in a few weeks early. So far everything has been pretty good since then. I go next week for another cervical measurement so we will see.

The point to my post is that I will be starting 17p injections next week. I've been lucky to never have to do butt shots in the fertility process. I know they aren't pleasant and I was hoping you ladies could tell me your secrets to making them hurt the LEAST.

  • I'm so sorry you've had such a rough road to get here.  I hope to see you here for a H&H 9 months.  I have been lucky enough to not have to do very many shots either, so I won't try to give advice.  GL though!  T&P to you and your LO.

  • I'm so sorry for all that you have been through!  Congratulations and welcome!  I hope your appointment goes well next week.  I don't really have tips for the shots.  In my experience most of them weren't too bad.  There were a couple that did hurt but it didn't last long.  Towards the end, I was happy to be done with them though.  I hope your experience will be similar if not better!  GL!

  • The progesterone in oil is no fun at all. Some ladies like to ice before, but I never did. Here was my routine: turn on the heating pad, prep the meds in the syringe, feel around on my butt to a spot that didn't have a lump or a bruise in the upper and outer quadrant, alcohol swab, and my husband would inject the spot while I laid on my belly, I'd remove the syringe, and he'd be ready with a gauze pad to rub vigorously for about a minute to help absorption. Then I'd lay with the heating pad on my butt for 10-15 minutes to help the oil stay liquidy. By the end there were almost no spots that didn't hurt, so maybe my method isn't so great, but maybe I also have a sensitive tush. Good luck!

  • Hey lady!  I am so happy to see you over here!  I have been thinking of you and baby Michael.

    Congrats on this LO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am so glad you didn't have a long raod to get here!

I'm happy to hear that your cerclage is in and you'll be on 17p.  I'm on it and frankly, it hurt until I had a scare at 25 weeks when I got the steroid shots.  The nurse put the needle almost in my hip, which didn't hurt at all.  DH had been doing them in the center of my butt, which hurt.  Also, use the 25g needles.  They're smaller than the 22g ones that come on the syringes.  It makes a ton of difference.

Here's to a happy and healthy 9 months.  I'll be on pins and needles and non-stop prayer mode until I see you with your take-home baby!

  • Thanks so much ladies!

I should have clarified, the company my doc ordered the 17p from sends a nurse to my house each week to administer the shot. Thankfully I don't have to worry about doing it myself or having H do it. I haven't spoken to the company yet, they just placed the order today. I will be sure to discuss the needle size with them when they call!

I got the steroid shots when I was in the hospital with Michael and those burned like crazy! Hopefully these won't be as bad. Since it's just weekly and not daily I'm hoping that gives the butt cheeks time to heal a little in between!

I've been lurking LOTS over the past few months. Best of luck to you all!
