Natural Birth

Midwife Never Concerned....

I just wanted to know if this was normal for a midwife. For my first pregnancy I used an obgyn. I know that midwives do things differently but I was wondering if anyone can offer any insight. In the last two and a half weeks I have had pinkish/reddish spotting four times. It is never a lot. Maybe a spot or two the size of a pinky nail on the toilet paper when I wipe. It most recently happened on Sunday.

Whenever this happens I inform my midwife. Two times I went in and she used the doppler to check the heartbeat. It is always fine. She keeps telling me that what I am describing doesn't sound uterine. But she has never checked anything, not my cervix, not my urine, nada.

I know midwives are more hands off but this seems really hands off. Is this normal for a midwife?

Re: Midwife Never Concerned....

  • In my experience, that's normal for any care provider. I was never checked physically when I had spotting, either with the midwife or the physician.

  • I had spotting last week and was sent to L&D. I sat in triage for about 7 hours hooked up to the monitors (most annoying experience ever) and then was sent down for an US. Everything was good and I was sent home. No one ever checked my cervix or anything. I was surprised too, but I guess it's normal not to check.

  • I had spotting earlier than yours (4w, 6w, & 10w).  I called each time and they were not worried, I never had a special appointment for it or anything.  They told me sometimes it can be caused by intercourse.
  • I'm surprised she wouldn't check your urine, but everything else sounds normal pregnancy provider stuff. I've seen both a MW and OB for light bleeding and although my urine was checked by both they never did an internal. I think I had a uti one of those times.

  • Sounds normal, I know when I've been really concerned my MW asks if I'd like an U/S. I had spotting a lot with my second child, this one? Maybe a touch once. But my MW never checked my cervix until I was almost 39 weeks and I was needing to get the baby out with signs of Pre-e. and she only checked me once during actual labor.
  • With my first I had spotting that progressed to small red clots. I was sent in for an ultrasound and bloodwork. My progesterone was low so she asked me if I wanted to supplement. A lot of time progesterone gets done with the initial blood work. I would maybe ask about that, but otherwise i wouldn't worry.
