Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Making baby food? Beaba/Babypro? Help? :-)

My 5 month old is EBF and I'm planning on introducing "solids" around 6 months. I'm dead set and excited about making my own baby food for my daughter. I've never been big on cooking, so I actually don't have a food processor or steamer basket handy. I have a huge and heavy Kitchenaid blender that's made of polycarbonate. So, no-go on using that for my LO's first foods. I'm going to have to buy a little equipment one way or another. Doing my research about these specialty baby food makers and wanted some outside/experienced opinions! I'm leaning towards the Beaba Babycook and the First Years Babypro. The Babypro is about half the price and seems as sufficient, per reviews online. Any advice?? Thank you so much!

  • Honestly, you just need a good blender. I got the Baby Bullet as a present, and I like it well enough, but if I didn't have that I would just use my normal blender to make purees.

The babyfood makers are essentially just fancy - if you have the money, go for it. It's like with most items, they slap the word "baby" onto them and jack up the price.

  • I don't have either... I have the Baby Bullet (you can get it at walmart/target/BBB, etc) for like $50.  I like it because its small enough but you can still fit a lot of food in it.  3 sweet potatoes, 2 cups of peas or a whole bag of carrots and each makes enough food for a long time.  I made all my food on Feb. 20 and I still have about 3 weeks left of food... so making food once every 2 months is fine with me!

Anywho... of topic sorry, I also like the BB because it comes with 6 individual trays that you can put food in and "set" the dates for so you know when you made it.  And also has a bigger "feeding now" dish... and my LO seems to like the little face on the jar.  =)

  • Wow! I don't really need to steam?! Isn't steaming the best method for nutrient-retention? I have the magic bullet and actually kind of hate it, so I'll probably won't be able to give the BB a chance! Haha. I was leaning towards the all-in-ones simply b/c I thought I'd benefit from both the steam and chop options. Sounds like the 3 of you have gotten away with just a food processor or blender, though. How do you cook the foods that need to be cooked? Thanks for your inputs!
  • I just use a mini food processor. I make a small batch of something new each Saturday as we try out new foods. I freeze some and put 3-4 days worth in the fridge. I have the OXO cubes and the ice cube trays... The whole process takes me 30 minutes start to finish.

  • I use a steamer basket that I already had, but we steam a lot of veggies for our own dinners.

  • I bought a steamer basket for $6 & I use my food processor or blender.  I also bought some ice cube trays to freeze it in 1oz portions (then put in freezer bag).  A LOT cheaper than any baby food maker & you'll only puree your own baby food for 5-6 months anyway.  Extremely hard to justify spending $100 or even $50 on something when it only cost me $10 to do the exact same thing.  Little more work, but totally worth it.
  • Awesome. Thank you all very much! Decision made: food processor + steamer basket. Whenever I decide to experiment with some real cooking, I'll have those on hand :-)
  • Immersion blender. Small, cheap. Done.
  • Agree with PP, just use something cheap, or get yourself a good food processor for yourself.

Also, my mom had purchased me a tray that came with little cubes you could freeze the food in, and it was a huge PITA. It takes up sooo much space. Instead fo bought an Oxo covered ice tray, freeze the food in the tray (each cube is about 1oz) and then dump the frozen cubes in a freezer bag. That way they can fit anywhere in the freezer instead of having to be upright, and you don't have to constantly clean those dumb little containers.

  • I also owned the magic bullet and hated it. But I love the BB. Puree's food perfectly. I have never had a problem. I have been making food for LO for three months now and she loves it all. Great combos are apples and pears with powdered cinnamon. Of course, start with one food at a time when just starting off. You will love making your own food. Best thing next to breastfeeding. You get used to it. When leaving home, I just put containers in my playtex fridge on the go bag and food is fine all day. enjoy!

  • i have the baby bullet but honestly my regular blender and ice cube trys have been my best friend! Don't pay extra just because it says baby if you don't want to. If you have a crock pot that is another great way to cook his/her foods without having to stand there all the time. Email me if you like and I have no problem sharing some of my recipes. Also keep in mind seasonal fruits/veggies. daughter was born in June and it was Christmas/new years by the time I was ready to give her fruits which were mostly out of season.

    Good Luck

  • Boiling, baking and crock pot! All awesome
  • I am the mama of two healthy boys, ages 4 and 6 mos.  for my first, I made all his baby food, never once did he have something out of a jar, and the only thing I used was my cuisines food processor and ice cube trays.  Worked beautifully, I never needed or wished I had any other gear. Fast forward 4 years and I am just starting little bro on solids.  I received a baby bullet at my shower and I now am the owner of a vita mix and several other kitchen appliances.  With all the new gadgets, I still prefer my food processor and maybe my Vitamix if I am making a huge batch or milling grains for his cereals.  The food processor makes such quick work of purees and it is easy to control the texture and thickness of things as baby transitions to those.  I would really just invest in a food processor, it works way better and then you can actually use it when you're done making baby food!  Good for you making baby's food, it is the best way!!  And with a little forethought and planning, it is soo easy!!!

  • We don't have a steam basket so we bake the veggies that need to be soft and then throw them into the food processor. Good Luck!!
