1st Trimester

Flaxseed

Is flaxseed safe during the first trimester? As soon as I got a BFP I let my OB know all the supplements I was taking and she said to continue taking flax until 34 weeks. However, I was reading a pregnancy book (and then googled, evil google) that said absolutely no. I've stopped just in case, but what have your doctors and midwives said?
Sept 2013 started TTC#2 (never got PP period so hoping for the first egg to drop)
Jan 2014 - diagnosed POF (Premature Ovarian Failure) and told pregnancy not possible without egg donor because my ovaries would never function again with my hormone levels (FSH 136, LH 98.6, AMH <.03, estradiol 0, HCG 7) - using acupuncture, chiropractic care and TCM herbs / supplements
March 11, 2014 ovulated despite every doctors prognosis!!!
Oct 2014 hormones (FSH 48, Estradiol 89, HCG 1) not good, but heckuva lot better!

Nov. 16, 2015 FET of single adopted 5AA embryo - BFN

Re: Flaxseed

  • I would trust your OB. They usually use research to guide there knowledge. And most OB wouldnt steer you wrong. I try to stay clear of google...because lack of creditability to the sources. that is just my opinion. Good luck!

  • Anyone can post whatever they want on the internet, I wouldn't use it to guide you for what to take or not during pregnancy. If your OB said it was fine then I am sure it is fine.

  • Why would this be a No No??? I never heard of this... I sprinkle flax in my cooking here and there ... why is it bad?

I am quoting my doctor here...she said to stop flaxseed at 34 weeks because of "theoretic bleeding risk." I saw you are 36 weeks so you may want to check with your doctor just in case, but I can't imagine there are any issues.

And, the sites I was more concerned about weren't sites where people post anything but the Mayo Clinic. But you are all right. I should trust my doctor. Thanks for subsiding my paranoia :)

  • Flaxseed is a good form of the DHA recommended during pregnancy. Maybe not recommended after 34 weeks because it's heart healthy and affects the blood that way? Also, I've been tipped to use some flaxseed to help with that terrible constipation that accompanies pregnancy! Good luck and best wishes!
