Spotting & Exercise

I know this question has been asked before but I can't seem to find the answer and I need some reassurance right now.

I just got back from the gym and I noticed pink spotting when I wipe. This is the first time I've gone to the gym since I got my positive last week. I'm about 5-6 weeks along. Is this something to be concerned about? Dr. google is giving me mixed answers. Did anyone else have a similar experience and everything turn out okay? I feel fine and don't have any extra cramping, just the normal twinges I've been feeling daily.

I go to the doctor Wednesday and I plan to call in the morning if the spotting doesn't go away.

Re: Spotting & Exercise

  • I definitely would not worry.  Sounds like some leftover implantation spotting/blood, or just discharge.  You could just be irritating your cervix if you did something like running or fast movement.  Throughout my pregnancy with DD, I ran, did kickboxing, lifted weights, etc until my due date.  I think I do remember more discharge than usual, so you may just want to wear a pantyliner when you exercise.  Sounds like you are just fine :)

Oh, and FWIW, my advice is to definitely keep up the exercise as frequently as possible!!  Don't let anyone scare you out of it.  SO important...  It helped with my pregnancy symptoms tremendously, and I had absolutely zero swelling, even after a traumatic labor and pushing for 3.5 hrs.  The nurses were shocked, and said I must be in awesome shape!  It also helped with my mental state of mind (I am prone to anxiety and depression), and I lost all my preg weight immediately (35 lbs on a 5'3 frame!), and I attribute it to exercise!!  So I promise it's worth it, and don't be scared away from doing whatever you were doing exercise wise PP :)

  • I have not had spotting. But I volunteer as a fitness instructor and I teach cardio-kickboxing. During my usual sessions I burn close to 1000 calories. So I called the OB today and she said I can exercise but I MUST keep my heart rate below 140. Over 140 deprives the baby of enough blood. She also said not to exercise for long periods of time because it can raise the body temperature and also cause problems. I recently bought a heart rate monitor from Walmart. It was $50, you wear a watch and a chest strap and it gives a continuous read on your heart rate.

  • Thanks for the advice ladies. I will be getting a heart rate monitor. My heart rate soars when I exercise so it looks like walking may be in my future. I'll be speaking with my doctor more Wednesday but at least I'll be able to sleep a bit tonight.
