Considering how many posters I've read who said they got PG after being on the pill and taking antibiotics, I'm pretty surprised. Wondered what those people will say now.

Re: The pill isn't affected by antibiotics

  • I'm a pharmacist and while it's true that the pill itself is not affected by antibiotics there is still a chance that the effectiveness can be compromised by taking any antibiotic.  It basically comes down to whether or not you experience GI side effects from your antibiotic.  When you take the pill, the medicine is absorbed through your GI tract.  But since people can experience diarrhea (which is basically increased motility of your GI tract) while on antibiotics, it basically "flushes" the meds through your GI system faster than it normally would.  Which means the meds have less time to become absorbed and there is less of it in your system.  So if you are not experiencing diarrhea while on antibiotics, chances are the effectiveness of your pill will be the same.  But it's impossible to guess how each specific person absorbs meds.  And there's no formula to estimate that this amount of diarrhea = that amount of drug loss. So even though the medications themselves do not interact, I usually recommend back up protection anyway.

  • I second the GI problem issue, and raise you vomit.  I vomit a lot when I have chest congestion, which I usually get antibiotics for.  Disclaimer, I have never gotten pregnant, while on birth control.
  • So, when someone says they got pregnant on antibiotics, they're really telling you about having the sh!ts.  Great.
