I guess parents don't teach "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all" anymore.

I understand WHY you're asking and although it might seem like common sense to many people...there is no reason to be ridiculed for being extra cautious. You would be find at a bonfire...don't worry!

Someone always has to break out the puppies and the rainbows...

    wow sorry I even asked...

I just wasn't sure with all of the smoke generated from a bonfire if it was safe... I know clothes reek of smoke after a bonfire so I wasn't sure...

guess it's safe thanx for all of your thoughts

normally when i'm around a bonfire i stand AWAY FROM the smoke, i usually tend to not just stand in front of it and breathe deeply.  But that's just me.  call me crazy.

You see, I think there is reason to be ridiculed for being exta stupid, er, "cautious."  If the human race were so fragile that going to a bonfire could cause harm to a 6 week old unborn baby, we would have been extinct a long, long time ago.

  • Why in the name of all that is holy would it not be? You don't usually sit IN the fire do you?

maybe she means all the smoke from the fire?

honey, wood burning smoke is different from cigarette burning smoke. But if this is what you are worried about, just stand downwind.

please god that this is what she is worried about.

Um, you mean stand upwind from the fire.  Downwind would be standing in the path of the smoke.  When being condescending, be sure what you're saying is correct!  :)

By the way, has anyone noticed the funny coincidence that the OP is being flamed for a question about a bonfire?  Hee hee hee!

  • um are they planning on roasting you because in that case i'm gonna say no...
  • Wait, this wasn't MUD

right, right! upwind, not downwind. :face palm:

    stupid preg-head!

  • SHAME ON ALL OF YOU!  Why are you all being so mean to a newly pregnant woman who just wants to be as safe as possible for the health of her baby?  Someone who has probably never been through this before?!  Instead of being so cruel, why not just be supportive?  As forums like this were meant for?  There are actually a few sites that have information on how the carbon monoxide can be dangerous as well as any chemicals if the wood has been treated (and since it's her friend's bonfire and she's not bringing the wood herself there is a chance that it is).  While I'm sure it's fine if one just uses some caution there is no need for all of you to be such jerks.  Is that the way you're raising your kids?  Shame on you.

  • It hasn't really been studied, but one potential problem might be that burning wood treated with harmful chemicals would send those chemicals into the air, where they could be inhaled. Also, theoretically, breathing smoke from any burning materials could reduce the amount of oxygen in your bloodstream (depending on the amount of smoke) — and therefore the amount of oxygen that's available to your baby.
