Raw milk cheese question

Yesterday, I ate an enchilada and found out later it was made with an unpasteurized Havarti cheese. Since it was a hot enchilada, do you think it's okay that the cheese was made from raw milk?

Re: Raw milk cheese question

  • It's probably fine. I wouldn't worry too much about it. It sounds delicious!

  • I believe cheese has to be pasteurized in order to be sold in the US unless it's 'homemade'.  At least that's what an OB friend told me!

  • I think melted cheese is ok.  Heating it up would kill any of the bacteria in question.

I have bought Organic Valley's Raw Milk Cheddar at our local grocery, so you can find raw milk cheese. It's usually labeled though, because it's a selling point with some people.

  • This. I'm sure it was fine.

Edit: oops, didn't hit the quote button. My answer was it is fine though :) It was heated and if there were any little bacteria (the chance is slim anyway, there's been very few outbreaks in unpasteurized products) they were killed by the heat.

  • We follow WAPF guidelines for pg.  I intentionally drink raw milk and eat raw milk cheese daily. You're fine.
  • Once the cheese is heated it is pasteurized.  You have nothing to worry about.

Thanks everyone for responding.  I think I just went a little overboard with the worry hopefully.
