2nd time mommies...step right in!!

I have a question...I am a matron of honor for my sister in october, I will be 8 months by then.  She asked me to be in the wedding when we were ttc, and she is very excited for the huge bump...I am apprehensive.  We need to order the dresses soon, and we are ordering them online so I will not be able to try it on.  The dress is empire waisted and flowy, so I think it will work with my huge bump.  My question is ...how many sizes up should I go?  I am usually a 12...maybe get a 20??  I feel like I should get a huge dress just in case

Re: 2nd time mommies...step right in!!

  • I was in a wedding a few years ago shortly after I had my son and I bought a dress 2 sizes bigger than normal in case I didn't lose the baby weight in time, and that worked pretty well, b/c I could still have it fitted a little smaller.  The MOH in that wedding though was about 9 months pregnant for the wedding and I think she ordered about 2-3 sizes up.  If you're normally a 12, I think a 20 is still going to be pretty big (b/c it's probably going to be huge on your top b/c you're not likely going to gain the weight in your shoulders).  If it's empire waisted it should give you more room for your belly as well and you still want to make sure it will fit your bust area.  I know this isn't super helpful to you but it's impossible to tell what size will work best until you're already there!  Depending on where you're ordering (i.e. if it's J Crew, Ann Taylor) you may be able to exchange it for a different size closer to the wedding too.  HTH! Good luck!

  • I'm not sure if this will help or not.

SIL's wedding was 3 months after I had DS. But when i went to try on bridesmaid dresses I was about 8 months pg. Normally I would say I'm a 4/6 dress. I tried on a 12 and could get it to zip. (I gained about 55lbs by that time) I would suggest ordering a few sizes bigger than your size now. If you need alterations it is much easier to have something taken in than to let it out!

  • i am in my cousins wedding in July and I will be 8 months as well!! I am normally a 6 and i ordered a 14, my chest are huge right now and my belly is getting there! if the 14th does not fit i figured i would get it altered the week of the wedding (i found a lady who will do it the week of)  but i recommend order big and alter just to be on the safe side!

  • Get it bigger cuz u can always alter it to fit u later instead of adding on
  • I was in my friends wedding a few years ago. I was only 5 months along at the time, but I just went 2 sizes up and had the top portion altered to fit the girls. You can also look for a maternity dress as well. I know David's Bridal has maternity dresses for bridesmaids.

  • That's a pretty huge jump.  Of course you can't be sure how much weight you'll gain, the things you really need to consider are few.

The bump.  An Empire waisted, flowy dress will for sure allow for this, and only require maybe a size (or two) up.

The girls.  Your boobs could grow several sizes.  Or not.  But you have no real way of knowing.  Again though, depending on the cut and material of the dress, you shouldn't need more than 4 sizes up, TOPS.

FInally, the weight gain.  You do actually have some control over this.  Are you eating everything in sight "because you can"?  If you are, then yes, several sizes up is a safe bet.  If you are inclined to try and still eat a healthy diet, then you probably won't gain so much weight that requires that many sizes up.

I can tell you that by the end of my pregnancy, I had only gained 10 lbs (and that was at the VERY end).  This is unusual, but it was because I had gestational diabetes and was on a strict diet, and was overweight to begin with.  These factors allowed me to technically lose weight while the baby grew quite well.  Anyhow as a result, my maternity clothes were actually a size smaller than my normal clothes (minus the full panel belly of course).

SO with that very long answer, my best advice is to go out to a dress shop and try some on with a fake belly.  This will at least give you a point of reference.  It is besides the point that you are ordering online.  Just try stuff on so you know.  A similar cut dress with similar material will give you an idea of how much flexibility you have in a given size.
