Stupid sewer backup

Every two years our sewer backs up, this time 1.5, into our shower downstairs. Of course DH blames me for using too much TP...but it's not my fault I pee every 20 min! Dammit. Now we have a mess in the basement and no water use till tomorrow! Ugh

Re: Stupid sewer backup

  • Oh man... we live in an old house and that happens to us too. The last time it clogged was the day before my first obgyn appointment where I knew I'd be getting a transvag ultrasound. I would have flooded the basement if I'd taken a shower that morning... I ended up getting out our biggest Rubbermaid tub, setting it in the bottom of the shower and standing in it to take a shower so the water would be caught instead of going down the drain. Sewer backups =  desperate times, ya know?

  • We have a sesspool so we have to get ours pumped out every 3 yrs, we arent connected to city sewer. We actually just got ours pumped today, gross! The guy said it was close to full so glad we did it before LO came.

  • We live two blocks from a bay so we only have two shallow rings side by side for our cesspool, one for our dry well. We have to get aerated (pumping just draws more ground water into them) every 9 months. It's awful and pricey.

Solution for the dry well: we have a pump to stick down in it and use the grey water to water the lawn and non-edible plants (we use biodegradable laundry soap). Beware that some counties do not allow the use of non-potable water on private land.

Solutions we are considering for the cesspool: adding a third one-ring cesspool or installing a composting toilet system (the composter is outside the house or in the crawl/basement and the inside plumbing is normal).

  • Happened to us too. Turns out we have something called a building trap, which creates an eventual backup. Plumber suggested every couple of years have them come out and snake the drain. In the meantime they said every other month pour 2 large buckets down the drain where it backs up (pour it fast to create pressure). Also, to flush the toilet often, and run water to keep things moving through.
