1st Trimester

Please help - super concerned

I had my first doc appointment yesterday (9 weeks along).  Everything went well except they told me I have a minor bacterial infection.  I have been prescribed Metrondiazole Gel and told to use it twice a day for five days.  I have been researching this a bit today (due to the completely unhelpful informaiton provided by the pharmacist) and there are ALOT of mixed messages out there pertaining to the use of this medicine while pregnant.  Has anyone gone through this same thing, used this medicine during their first trimester or have any reassuring words.  You read how you want to treat this type of infection ASAP if pregnant but then you read not to take the only two drugs they prescibe!  Please help.

 Thanks!

Jess

  • If I read this right and there are only 2 drugs available, and neither is recommended during pregnancy, then your doctor must have determined that the infection you have is more dangerous to your child then the effects of the drugs.

So sorry you are having to go through this! It's so hard to determine what is best for you and LO when you are pregnant!

  • Also, keep in mind that a gel is going to treat the infection topically, so not nearly as much medicine will enter your blood stream as a pill form would.

  • A lot of prescriptions aren't deemed 100% safe because there haven't been any actual studies on human babies.  That being said the Dr has to decide if it is better to treat you and risk the rx doing something or the infection causing something worse to happen.  Progesterone isn't actually recommended for pregnant women yet you see a large number of us are on it!

  • Thanks to everyone who has replied - I was able to call my previous GYN who I have always trusted and she says that this medication is prescibed all the time by them as well.  I think this is a case of googling gone bad - Thanks again - Jess
