Peanut Butter?!

I am a public health nurse (although obviously not in maternal/family health) and was just reading one of the pamphlets that we give out to pregnant mothers.  It states that if there is any family history of peanut allergies, it may be wise to limit your intake of peanut butter or to avoid it completely.

I'm curious to know if anyone has heard this one before, particularly from a reputable source?

  • I can't remember where I read it, but I have heard this before.  I looked it up after Princess Kate refused peanut butter paste, because I had never heard about it before.

  • I've never heard to avoid it while pregnant.  I can see maybe while nursing, but, not while pregnant.  Then again, we also have zero food allergies in our family.  Just still seems odd.

  • DD has milk and egg allergies.

I asked her allergist if I could do something different in this pregnacy. She told me to avoid peanuts and seafood after week 20.

Not sure if it will prevent LO#2 of having food allergies, but I doesn't hurt to try.

  • My daughter's allergist told me to avoid it during the 3rd trimester because she has peanut and tree nut allergies.  My OB said it was fine but I figured it couldn't hurt to give it up for a few months.

  • DH and I both have zero family history of food allergies, and I was told to limit PB to once a week after 20 weeks during my first pg.

  • I don't recall any strong evidence in the research linking food allergies in infants/toddlers to the mother's diets... but now I'm curious and will have to look it up because I eat peanut butter/nuts almost every day.

Form what I understand, the nut allergy is more linked to what the kid eats (not mom) and therefore it's more important to watch the peanut/nut introduction when they start eating solids.

  • I have heard about it but I don't follow it.  They way I look at it, and so does my Dr, is that look how many food allergies there are now compared to when we were young?  Our Mothers didn't limit their pb, sandwich meat, etc.  Heck most of them did a lot worse when pregnant but when it comes to allergies it almost seems, to me, that the more crazy people are about it the more common they are becoming!

  • I've read it in a few places and believe it to be true! Luckily there are no peanut allergies in my family and it's all I've been living off of since my morning ("all day") sickness is slowing killing me.

basically said that recent studies have not shown any evidence that avoiding peanuts during pregnancy reduces the chance your child will have an allergy.
