Newborn or 0-3 Month size?

What size of baby clothes did you primarily buy?

Newborn or 0-3 months. I don't want all the clothes to be ridiculously big, but i also don't want the baby to grow out of them within a couple of weeks.

I'm just wondering what everyone else is doing.

Audrey is going to be a big sister!

Re: Newborn or 0-3 Month size?

  • It depends on how big your baby is.  DD was 8 pounds, 10 ounces and never fit into newborn clothes, so I, personally, won't buy any NB things at all for DS-to-be.  If you have a small baby, though, a lot of the 0-3 stuff will swim on her.

  • So far, my mom has gone crazing buying clothes and I've bought a few things...

I've accumulated a good mixture of Newborn and 0-3mo since we don't know how big she'll be...

My friend who had her daughter said she got tons of 0-3 mo and her daughter was so little (not preemie), she didn't fit in anything so she had to go out and buy a bunch of newborn stuff so she had some clothes for the first few weeks.

  • I purchased some 3-6 months and 6-9..only one newborn item so far for the hospital..I figure I'll get some 0-3 at my baby shower..or else I'll pick up a few things before my delivery..I feel like our little girl will grow out of things so fast and newborn clothes are so small..She is 3lbs already and I'm only a little over 6 months..
  • I have found with things like gowns, it didn't matter much.  For actual outfits I purchased very few newborn (unless I knew baby would wear t right away) and leaned more to 0-3 month.  however its really weight you need to look at and that differs brand to brand.  If you are a FTM then you might not know whether to expect a larger or smaller baby.  But my DD was 7lbs 14 oz and I wouldn't have been able to get her in NB because most only go to 7 or 8 pounds.  Be sure you are checking weights and leave tags on in case you do need to return. Happy shopping!

  • it depends... if your baby is expected to be around 6lbs def newborn!! if your looking at more of like an 8lbs baby def. 0-3months.. My son was 6 11ounces and I didnt buy newborn and my husband was out searching for clothes the day we brought him home from the hospital

We are only buying 0-3. My first was 8.10 and I have a feeling this one will be close to 9 lbs.

  • I have a few NB things but have primarily been getting 0-3.  DS weighed 7lbs 12oz and he wore NB size for 3-4 weeks.  We had to go buy some additional NB stuff for him because we didn't have enough.  But for this baby I just got a few things and I'm going to see how big she is.

  • I would only buy a few newborn and keep the tags and receipts in case they don't fit your LO when born.

I would focus more on 0-3 as your LO will be in them longer.

  • I'm focusing mostly on 0-3s, but have a few newborn things too. Even if LO isn't too big for newborn clothes when she's born, she'll probably only spend a few weeks in them + some 0-3 clothes can still fit a newborn (even if a tad big). I just feel that if I buy a lot of newborn sizes she'll end up not wearing a bunch of the clothes, or only wearing them once... Which is kind of a waste.

I just washed all the baby clothes I have and I couldn't believe how much they shrunk. I used cold water and no heat in the dryer either and still. I have 3 month clothes that I pray she is able to fit into once she's born. Most of my clothes for her are 3 months and I'm afraid she'll only wear the outfits once. Don't go crazy with buying clothes for a newborn, I would consider only getting a few onesies and more 6 month sizes

I had only bought 1 pack of 5 NB onesies, and the rest was all bigger sizes. DD ended up being tiny & I had to go out & buy more clothes for her. She was swimming in all other sizes, so I say be safe & have at least a couple outfits.

  • I would do a few newborn outfits and onesies -- and a lot more of 0-3.

While weight does have a lot to do with it, their weight fluctuates after birth and when they get home.

DD#1 was 7lbs 5oz and her newborn clothes were swimming on her! She was not at all a little baby but still her little 'take me home' outfit was very large. She lasted in newborn clothes for a few weeks but we got a lot of use out of 0-3 month clothing.

If you're having a shower, most people will buy you newborn clothes. I think they just get excited that they're so small and cute lol and go all out. Most mom's will get you more 0-3 or 3-6 but with the Summer coming, I'd definitely do a lot more 0-3 month clothing.

  • I only got a couple newborn things. and one of them is her going home outfit
  • i have a few newborn things, maybe 6 or 8 onesies, 3 sleepers and a few pairs of pants. most of the onesies and pants were hand-me-downs.
most of the stuff i have is 0-3, with a a few 3-6 (and like, three 6-9 sizes)

i have noticed that size varies a lot from brand to brand.  all the gerber stuff is tiny! gerber newborn = 5 to 8lbs. but carter's newborn is something like 7 to 11 pounds.
and some of the outfits i have just seem huge.

i kept the tags on everything until i had an ultrasound at 36 weeks and they told me my daughter was around 6lbs. at my next appointment my dr. said she expected her to be 7 to 7.5lbs at birth.

that being said, i know it's all basically guessing until she is actually born; i'm bringing a newborn coming home outfit and a 0-3 coming home outfit, just in case.

  • Buy nothing. Everyone will give you so much stuff and they outgrow it in a heartbeat!!! Focus on 6 months size plus.

Depending on how your baby grows, your baby could still outgrow things in a couple of weeks.

DS was 10 lbs 22" and never wore NB.  He wore 0-3 for maybe 3-4 weeks, 3-6 until 2 months old, 6-9 until 4 months old 9-12 until 6 months old.  I try to buy things that run bigger but I did find that Carter's (which is the sizes I mentioned above) he moved through very quickly.  No one expects their child to be 29.5" at 6 months old.  He always outgrows his clothing due to length and not weight.  You just never know how tall your child will be or how they will grow.

    ditto this exactly.

  • I bought some of each. With DD, I brought a couple sleepers in each size to the hospital and the 0-3 month ones were ludicrously huge compared to her (she was 6lb, 15 oz). Even the newborn sleepers were a bit big! She ended up wearing newborn sizes for the first 6-8 weeks. This baby is supposed to be measuring much bigger, but I still bought some newborn stuff.

  • My DS was 9lbs 1oz & 21" long when he was born, and 0-3 clothes were SWIMMING on him.  We had to stop at Target on the way home from the hospital to get a few NB sleepers - we didn't buy any NB on the recommendation of everyone we know.  He wore NB for around 4-5 weeks, then wore 0-3 until he was about 3 months old.  This time around, we're definitely buying some NB stuff in advance, walking around Target 48 hours after a c/s wasn't the best experience.

  • I asked my mom what she did because I didn't know what to do either. She said that unless you have a super small baby it's almost pointless to get newborn because they don't fit into them that long.

In the end I got almost all 0-3 months.

  • We had mostly 0-3 month and 3 newborn outfits.  We ended up taking DD to Target at 5 days so that we could get a few more newborn outfits for her.  She is almost 6 weeks and has just now outgrown the newborns in length.  DD was 7lbs 9oz at birth and probably close to 10lbs now but is long and lean.  It all depends on the baby though.
