Toast - any kind of bread?

If I want to start giving Callie toast for breakfast is there any kind of bread she shouldn't get? I typically do a double fiber wheat type bread for us (although we don't normally eat bread anymore since trying to lose weight).

Hannah eats potato bread because that's what we eat.

  • The only type I might be hesitant to give is the 12 grain type with the whole nuts, seeds, and grains in them.  The chunks would probably be hard to chew and might be a choking hazard?

You can flame me for being Captain Obvious BTW. Wink

  • The BLW book said babies shouldn't have really high fiber things (like all-bran cereal or something), but I just asked Dr. google and couldn't find any info on why not.

Along those lines, has anyone asked their dr about honey wheat bread?  I know they aren't supposed to have honey, but I forgot to ask if it is okay in baked goods.

I have read many things that say no honey in cereals like honey but cheerios so I don't think bread is ok.

I think it's supposed to be avoided, even in baked goods, but I could be mistaken.  I can ask my dr. tomorrow.

  • I've heard conflicting things about honey in baked goods. A lot of sites say that baking or processing it would kill the possible bacteria in it, but I typically avoid it just because I've also seen things that say none, ever, period!

On bread, I try to give whole wheat only, we're trying to limit her intake of enriched white flour, but we do the same for ourselves. She mostly just licks off the hummus or (gasp!) peanut butter that I put on it, and then hands it back to me for a refill, haha!

  • We give DD whole wheat bread. Nothing fancy, just 100% whole wheat bread. She poops like normal and seems to like it. The nice thing about bread is you can buy a loaf specifically for her and put it in the freezer to keep it fresh. Just get out a piece every day or two and toast it for her. We went toast to DC 1-2 days a week and I toast it in the morning and send a 1/4 for her to eat. If she would eat more, I'd send more. But that one piece of bread lasts for 4 servings. I keep the remaining toasted pieces in the fridge until I need them.

  • The first time I gave Zoe toast she was spazzing out for a piece of mine so I just handed her some. She loved it and then 2 days later I panicked because it's full of nuts and seeds. I figured - she didn't have a bad reaction and she likes it so I'm not going to worry about it. I tried to switch her to a more basic wheat bread and she wouldn't eat it.

Great idea. Didn't even think of that! yes! I was afraid I'd be throwing out 3/4 of a loaf of bread frequently!

Side question: Does anyone spread jelly/jam on the bread? Is that ok? What flavors?

  • I knew one of the sites mentioned something about wheat... Even they say the recommendations vary...

    https://www.easybabylife.com/foods-to-avoid.html#Wheat

    Wheat

    What to do?

This one is a bit tough, because recommendations vary between countries.

The most recent recommendation that I have read is to start slowly - very slowly) with wheat while still breastfeeding. A study published in 2010 indicated a lower rate of celiac disease in families with a history of this disease, when gluten was introduced to the baby between 3 and 7 months of age.

I have also read in many places the older recommendation to wait with wheat products until your baby is around one year old.

Since recommendations vary so much, talk to your baby's doctor about your situation.

    What can happen?

Your baby could develop gluten intolerance, also called celiac disease. Celiac disease is a digestive disease that damages the small intestine and interferes with absorption of nutrients from food. People who have celiac disease cannot tolerate gluten, which is found in wheat, rye and barley.

Gluten intolerance is hard to diagnose, but if your baby has diarrhea that won't go away, smelly stools, does not gain weight and maybe has a bloated abdomen, you should contact a doctor. The tendency to get the disease is inherited.

  • AS long as there aren't any seeds in the bread you should be fine.  But you'll have to watch for an allergic reaction to different grains....multigrain bread wouldn't be a good idea until you know she isn't allergic to any.

Thanks, something I wouldn't have thought of!

I put a very thin layer of jelly on Ev's toast. I just bought a thing of organic grape jelly and I use that. I'm sure it has a lot of sugar, but I probably use all of 1/4 tsp on a whole piece of toast so I'm not too worried.

    Hahaha!  That cracks me up.

We just give whatever bread we have in the pantry.  Mostly whole wheat, but he's had white.  I'll either spread some jelly, a fruit puree, or a little peanut butter on it.   We use the Polaner All fruit jelly, but I won't say he hasn't had Smuckers.

I never even thought of that.  We only eat honey wheat bread so that's all she's had.  *shrug*

I put some margarine on DDs because the GI recommended adding margarine or olive oil to her foods to give her extra calories (she's been having trouble gaining weight and has a milk intolerance).  I was thinking of spreading some apple or pear sauce on a piece, thought that would be yummy too.

I've spread avocado on her toast which she really liked.  That's a great way to add some good fats.

    Mmmmm avocado toast sounds delicious

  • I've been toasting quinoa bread from Trader Joe's...it's really yummy and has something like 7 grams of protein per slice.  DD loves it.
