maternity leave "request" question

i posted the other day about a telling work about my maternity leave.  i work in education and want to take 6 months off.  i got great suggestions so thank you!

however, i noticed tonight that our handbook says i can "request" up to 12 months off and you have to put it in writing 6 months before (which is now)

i was planning on just telling them, hey this is what i am doing.  i am talking to them tomorrow and nervous that they are going to say no, i cant take that long.  any thoughts?

Re: maternity leave "request" question

  • I don't think they *have* to hold your position after 12 weeks, but I might be wrong.

This may or may not be helpful to you, but are you a teacher? I'm asking because when I took maternity leave when I was teaching, they gave me 8 weeks (complications at birth) and the other 4 from FMLA could be used at any time during those 12 months. I had my daughter in April and my maternity leave went to the last week of school. Then I had the summer off. So I could have technically used the other 4 weeks after the summer was up

EDIT: At least this is how I think it is in the US (not sure where you live)

  • school counselor in nj. im due september so wanted to go back in march.  but between hormones and nerves, im worried that i am going to get denied because of the handbook saying "we may request..."
  • I guess it just depends on what's normal at your school. 6 months is a LONG maternity leave and would definitely be denied where I work. Most work places in the US go by the 12 week FMLA law (as PP said!). That being said, I guess it doesn't hurt to ask but I have no idea why you should be surprised or upset about being turned down for a 6 month leave..

  • I teach in NJ and our handbook is not very friendly either. I think they just have to word it that way for legal reasons. In my district you write a letter to the BOE requesting the extra time and they either approve you or don't. For what it's worth, I don't know of anyone that has been denied their request.

  • Well, under FMLA, they only have to cover you for 12 weeks. My only suggestion is to ask within their time requirements, and be prepared that it could go either way. Also, I would be sure to understand if your position will be held for that time.

My company let me take 9 months off with my first, but I don't see that happening with this one. :( I'll probably only get 4.
