A couple we know just had a little girl named Rowyn, but I'd never heard of it before then. It's cute, but NMS. If you love it then go for it!

I realllly liked the name Rowan for a girl, but DH nixed it early on... I think it's mysterious and unique.

NMS at all. If I were to go with the first name, I'd spell it Rowan and it would be for a boy, but that is also NMS for a boy.

we've decided that if we use a girl's first name that people will or might assume to be a boy's and we probably will (Logan is an example we've considered) then we will use a feminine middle name. I learned this from my friend Stevie whom everyone has always assumed was a boy before they met or spoke with her. She has "Stevie Nicole Smith" on her business cards and said it makes things easier. If our child/adult wants people to assume they are their correct gender on paper, they will have the option to use their first and middle name. Stevie said "Oh, I thought you'd be a guy" gets old to hear. So she will have a choice for her gender to be known if she wants. Just another perspective for you. I like the creativity of your name choice.

Considering Rowyn isn't even a name, just a yooneek spelling of Rowan, I am not a fan. I do think of Rowan as a boy's name, but it is getting more popular for girls as well for some reason.

ETA: Ugh! I just noticed the middle name and it's spelled wrong too! I work for UC Berkeley, so please use the correct number of Es if you must go with this middle name.

In all honesty, I hate it the way you have it spelled, but I LOVE it spelled Rowan. This has always been one of my favorite girl's names but my DH isn't a fan. Good thing we are having a boy!

I think the name sounds adorable, but you will be doing your daughter a disservice if you chose to mangle the spelling.

I've come to the conclusion that at least half the posters on this board are nuts and rude in their responces.

I think Rowyn Berkley is beautiful. So unique and different. By the way, when it comes to the spelling of a baby's name there is no "right" way to do it. If you can't be creative and make your baby's name special when you want to, then that is your own inability to think outside of the box.

Good for you for not giving your child a cookie cutter name!

By the way, my parents spelled me Aimee instead of Amy. I will let my mom know that she spelled my name "wrong". haaaa haaaa

Lets hope her eyes dont roll too far back into her head.

I agree on the spelling with a Y that it is different and I dont want people to think we are just trying to be unique by doing that. However when I shared this name with a friend of mine spelled Rowan she said "oh; like Row-Anne." And I dont like that at all. I thought maybe with the Y it couldnt be confused. I do appreicate all your honest feedback though because I am not sold on spelling it with a Y but DH likes it that way

And, regarding Berkley-we didnt pick that name after UC-Berkeley so we are spelling it appropriately to where we got it from.

You asked for our thoughts. I would hope that you don't put much consideration into others' opinions when naming your child, bc everyone is so different. It is what you like that matters most, of course.

Berkley, although spelled Berkeley, reminds me of the city and school. I'm not a fan of the first name for either sex but if you use it, I'd spell it Rowan. Adding a "y" doesn't make it more unique or feminine.

I dont think trying to change the spelling of a name is unique or different. It is boring because a lot of people are doing this now. If you want to change the spelling of a name that's fine but don't claim that it makes you so creative.

I dont think trying to change the spelling of a name is unique or different. It is boring because a lot of people are doing this now. If you want to change the spelling of a name that's fine but don't claim that it makes you so creative.

I didnt find your comment to be rude or harsh; I appreciate your feedback and I know this is more a boy name than girl (Hell the first time I saw it was in a baby name book under "boys"

Thanks again everybody for your comments! I am not sold on spelling it with a Y which is why I asked for opinions. And I am not trying to spell it with a Y to be more unique, feminine, to upset teachers etc. it is in attempt to not get it confused for "Row Anne".

Thanks also everybody for the encouragement to name our baby what we want to-we have decided on this name (DH and I LOVE it!) now just trying to nail down spelling

I agree with other posters. I don't mind Rowan for a girl or boy, but the 'y' thing gets old.

And to be fair to OP, it was other posters who got upset about the so-called "harsh" comments. She never said anything about that except thanking people for their responses (unless I am missing something which is totally possible).

The spelling doesn't bother me, I named my son Tristen NOT Tristan and my name is NicHole not Nicole so there ya go. BUT I think both names sound like boy names, having a "gender" neutral name like Rowan I'd pick more of a GIRLY name as the middle. For instance we chose Rory as our girl name and technically it's a boy Irish name, but has become popular as a girls name. So we picked a feminine middle like Grace. But ultimately you'll do what you want, and no ones opinion will matter!
