Ugh! I'm so frustrated re: job interview

DH's work just informed everyone that they are going to be switching to a new schedule effective April 2nd at the beginning of the month. We have the perfect schedule right now and have been able to avoid daycare/nanny for the past 2.5 years. We now are going to need a babysitter at least until summer, and then my sister can help out once she is done with school.

SO, with the added costs for childcare, I looked in to getting another per diem job as a nurse. I found a job posting at a local hospital and applied for it about 3 weeks ago. The job I applied for was for per diem day shift (7am-7pm). I applied on a Friday evening, and they called me the following Tuesday and set up an interview time.

Well, I interviewed last week and was so disappointed! As soon as I got to the interview, the HR person basically said 'You applied for a position at a facility that is going to be brand new and there are alot of people who applied internally for this job before we posted it to the public. We have already placed bids on this job to others within the system, so the job you applied for is no longer available.' She then said that they have a 'part-time' position available on a different shift (3pm-3am), which their part time staff would be required to work every Wednesday.

She then went on to explain that since they are switching to a new facility, there is going to be a 'black out' period for no vacation time allowed from June-August, but for me it would be April-August because I would need to go through orientation first. She asked me if this would work, and I was honest and told her that I had a vacation planned for a week in June and it could not be rescheduled.

I feel as though I got shot down before I even got a chance to 'interview'. I think the interview went ok, although I was bummed that I was't interviewing for the original job. Per diem staff make more money (like $10/hour more) because they are not benefits eligible, so they do not accrue paid ill or vacation time. Part-time staff do, but are not eligible for healthcare benefits. So, even if I would accept the part-time position, I wouldn't necessarily be making more money. I could make more money by working the same amout of hours of OT at my current job each week.

I feel as though I just wasted my time and money. I think that I upset my current manager a little bit when I told him that I was interviewing elsewhere. I haven't had a job interview in 7 years, so I guess if anything the experience is worth it, but I'm still upset that I was given bad news before the interview even began!

  • What a bummer. I would be upset too. It doesn't seem like they are a good fit for you now either. I would keep looking and not tell my manager about my quest either.GL

  • That does sound frustrating.  Unfortunately I've never heard anyone describe the job hunting  and interview process as fun, exciting, and/or relaxing.  Keep looking, GL!

  • You would think they could have called you to let you know the position was filled!  How frustrating!!

Yeah, I would have probably kept my manager in the dark a little longer but they asked if they could contact him for a reference. He's the only boss I've had for the last 7 years. My first words to him were 'I love my job and have no intentions of leaving BUT'.
