massages - a do or a don't

i used to love getting monthly massages but have heard that massages can trigger morning sickness and nausea to pregnant women.  are there certain techniques or positions pregnant women should avoid during a massage?  also how is a prenatal massage different from a normal massage?  thanks in advance!

  • You must notify them you are pregnant. Most places offer a prenatal massage and will not let you get one until you are in your 3rd tri and you will have to sign some paperwork!

I had a few during my 3rd tri and it was amazing.

  • I was just reading in my pregnancy week-by-week book today that massages can help alleviate m/s

  • thanks for the info! :)
  • I had a prenatal massage around 10 weeks.  The only difference was that they would not let me lay on my stomach or my back.  The entire massage was done while I was lying on my sides.  Different places have different pillows and tables for you to lay on.

  • I have not found one that will do one in the 1st Tri.

But after 1st tri they are fine and make sure the person is certified in prenatal.

  • My doctor said it was fine as long as they were certified.  However, I went yesterday and the therapist said she didn't feel comfortable administering a massage in the first trimester.  I just rescheduled.
  • Pivey's link covers it all. My best friend is a massage therapist and she said while they are in school they drill it into their heads daily to NOT ever massage a first tri. And it really is more liability than anything else.?
  • I got a massage in my first trimester and I called my doctor before scheduling it.  She said it was fine and to enjoy.  I also notified the spa at the time I scheduled my appointment and they said it was fine too.
