Our little girl arrived at 9:54 am yesterday March 10th, weighing 5 lbs 14 ozs and 20.5 inches long. It took a couple hours but we decided to name her Cassandra McKinley. Cassie for short. She is all limbs and beautiful and we are so in love.
My labor went fine. I was admitted Thursday night to start the induction and it took a full 24 hours of meds to get going enough to be able to start the pictocin and officially start labor. By that point I was only 3 cm and the meds we causing my contractions to go from no pain to extreme pain in a matter of 2 seconds and to come so often, that I was having trouble collecting myself between them and shaking violently. But they gave me the epidural and things got way better.
I labored through the night and they came in to break my water around 4 am and things went really fast from there. By 9 am I could tell that I needed to push and by the time everyone got set up, etc. I only had to do about 30 mins of pushing before Cassie popped out.
She released her meconium sometime during labor so the peds team was on hand to clean her up and get her breathing ok. It was a little of a rough start but DH and I both started bawling when we heard her cry.
They decided to take her to the NICU for a couple hours to acclimate since she did have a little rough start. They also wanted to do the head u/s then since we have been so concerned with the size of the ventricles of the brain. So they took her down and I got cleaned up and settled and got rolled down to see her a little while later.
Later that day we went back to the NICU to see her and the neonatologist was there and starts talking to us with a very serious look on his face. This doc has a very thick accent and I was still a little out of it so it took a while for me to process what he was saying.
They noticed her moving her arm back and forth a couple of times and when they put their hands on her to stop, it didn't stop. And this happened more than once. Based on this and her stats dropping slightly they realized it was a seizure. They called the neurologist on staff for a consult and were in the process of moving her bed and hooking her up to an EEG so they could monitor her brain waves. At this point she was fully admitted to the NICU.
After some monitoring it turns out that she is having an extreme amount of non-clinical seizures (can't see them happening but show up on the EEG) and she has to be constantly monitored and is on several medications to get them under control.
DH and I are beside ourselves with grief, sadness, fear, etc. They are doing all the testing they can to help try to figure out why this is happening and what is going on. But at this point the more important thing is to get them under control as this is a big stress on her tiny little brain.
We have her being following by the docs in NJ but we have already been in touch with the neurologists at CHOP and they are communicating with each other about best plan of treatment. Right now they are both agreeing with the current treatment and if things get worse we will make arrangements to have her transferred to CHOP. But right now we just want her to be treated and to not stress her body more by moving her.
We knew when we were diagnosed with the enlarged vents that we could face something like this, but none of the docs think this is due to the enlarged vents and is caused by something else. We may or may not know what.
I'm just so heartbroken that she has to go through so much already and I just don't know what to do. I know I have asked for miracles before and gotten them, but my little girl really needs another one now. This board has sent me so much love and support over the years, but can you please send some more prayers, positive vibes, etc to my little Cassie that she starts responding to the meds soon.
And as an advanced thank you, here are some pics of my sweet little girl.
~Lauren~
