Babies: 0 - 3 Months

blanket sleepers vs. sleepers w/ footies

I don't really get the blanket/bag sleepers.  I have a couple and I'll try them, but mostly I have lots of little sleep & play outfits.

Did/does your baby have a strong preference for the blanket sleepers over the regular sleepers?

If I put her in the sleeper and then swaddle her, I don't see what the big difference is.

Re: blanket sleepers vs. sleepers w/ footies

  • The baby goes in a regular sleeper ( foot pj's) and then goes in a blanket bag, I guess it's to prevent sids.....never used it, my DS was swaddled and now sleeps with like 3 blankets. He doesn't really move in his sleep.....takes after me! LOL

  • DD was swaddled in a SwaddleMe (with a footie sleeper on) from the time she was born untila bout a month ago. She instantly despised being swaddled, but she wasn't sleeping well with just a sleeper on (no blankets). I started putting her in the sleeper bags (combo) and she sleeps amazingly now. It's weird, but I think she is warmer in them because she is all skin to skin contact...
  • the blanket sleeper replaces a blanket, so if you swaddle, then you probably wouldn't need one. DD  doesn't like to be swaddled, so we do a sleeper and a sleep sack.

  • ohhh - ok, so like footie sleeper, plus the blanket sleeper - not instead of - hmmmmm - plus a regular onesie underneath???

That seems like a lot of layers. .. but I guess she may need it.

  • Now that we don't swaddle him anymore, DS sleeps in a footie sleeper and SleepSack bag for an extra layer. He's not old enough to use real blankets in the crib and our bedrooms get chilly in the winter.

  • We use a sleeper and a sleep sack, no onesie.

  • My dd hates being swaddles do I use the blanket sleeper with a onesie underneath.  I also have her in a positioner with a blanket tucked underneathed.  I like footed sleepers but it's so much easier at night to get her out of the blanket sleeper.
  • I agree with Monniehas....it is WAY easier to change diapers in the middle of the night when DS is in a sleep sack rather than a footed sleeper.  I've seen some blanket sleepers that are sleeveless and I'm assuming those are the ones people have that are also using footed sleepers?  The ones we have for DS have arms just like a footed sleeper except it's like a sack at the bottom rather than separated legs.  I wouldn't see why you'd need anything under the ones we have.
  • We also just use a footed sleeper and a sleep sack.  I think this combination is just as warm as a sleep blanket would be, we have plenty of sleepers so I chose to use the sleep sack.  Eventually babies won't want to be swaddled and they'll just break out of it, so you need something to keep them warm at night.  Since you already have the sleep & play outfits, all you probably need to do is put that on then the sleep sack.  I sometimes also put socks on DD under the sleeper because her feet get cold.  We're in Texas so it's not all that cold.  When DD was newborn and didn't roll around in her sleep, swaddling on top of a sleeper was fine.
