Baby Names

What legit adult names would you never use ?

I was reading the post about eternal little girl names, and I started thinking about names that I only associate with a particular age group/ generation. There are a ton of names that are 100% normal but I would never use because to me they are "eternal adult names" as in the 30s - 50s age range. I am not trying to offend anyone with any of these names !

A few that I can think off right away are names like Denise, Linda, Gary, and Dale.

No one would ever think anything of those names on an adult, but I cannot picture a single one of those on a baby or child !

What names can you think of that you would put in the same category ?

  • Hm. Let's see...

    Nancy, Donna, Lori, Gale, Beverly

Agree with Gary, Kenneth, Don... that's about it.

  • I have a friend that named his little boy Gary. I thought it strange, but its a cute kid, so I got over it ;)

I couldn't name a kid Wyatt. Ever. Ugh, makes my skin crawl.

I don't know that I could ever use Donald either.  Pamela, Cynthia and Darlene are also off the list.

My nephew is actually named Donald after my grandfather who my brother was really close to when he was littlt. He goes by "Donnie" and is quite adorable! I'll admit I was dubious at first, but when you start associating a name with a child, it really goes away and you get used to it. :)

  • There's actually a little girl in our church about four years old named Linda - I did think it was an unusual choice!

I like that Katherine is popular right now, but I can't imagine a little girl being called Kathy.

  • I think Nancy would actually be adorable on a little girl, and I know a young Linda who goes by Lindy.  It's very cute on her.

I can't picture a young girl named Sherry, Terry/i, Doris, Bertha, or Barbara.  For boys, it's certain nicknames I can't picture:  Dave, Bob, ***, Larry, etc.

  • I have this same problem with most boys' names, like William, Charles, Richard or Robert.  Boys' names don't go in and out of trends as much as girls' names do.  Men have used these names in Europe, for... well... centuries.  However, if you try to give them a nickname like Bill, Chuck, Richie, or Bobby no one will ever take the child seriously for having a real name as a nick name.  I have come to realize that I just can't give my son a name that comes with a nickname, even though, I have used one (myself) with family members for years.  At the same time, I would do the same if I had a girl; that is, pick a name both with a pretty long version for professional use and cute nickname for family use.

My husband's uncle was actually named "Danny" instead of "Daniel".  When we got married I wrote out the invitation to "Daniel", having no idea of the discrepancy.  Needless to say, he brought it up to me the first time we met in my receiving line, which I felt was super rude.  How were we supposed to know what his birth certificate said?!

  • For me, it's names like Linda, Donna, Barbara, Patricia....basically, anything that our moms (or women of our moms' generation) are named. I think it has to be more from our grandmothers' and great-grandmothers' generations to be considered "vintage" and make a comeback. Otherwise, I can only think of my mom, aunts, and my friends' moms.
  • Pretty much all of the family names I have to choose from..

Joyce, Phyllis, Henrietta... anything ending with -etta, actually.

  • Glen, Kenneth, Derek, Dawn, Donna, Karen

Both of my parents' names have been mentioned (and my older brother's too, b/c he's a jr.) and I think they're pretty timeless, so it's partially a matter of perspective, I guess.

  • Sharon, Cynthia (Cindy), Joanne (but I do really like Joanna), Maryanne, Cheryl, Deborah, Stacey (very born in the late 70s to me), Tiffany, Crystal

Richard (***), Chester, George, Walter, Martin

Also, I went to ballet with a little girl named Gayle in the 80's and I remember thinking it was weird that she was 5 and had an adult name... then again, I was also aware that my name was not totally within the norm...

I know young people with all those names you mentioned, so while I find it weird when I meet children with those names, I can definitely see it on kids.

Names I can't see on babies of kids are Clark, Patricia, Pamela, and Barry.

    Brenda, Barbara, Debbie, Albert, Jim.

I just have to say, I laughed aloud when I realised that both of my parents and one of my aunts are in that list . . .

  • . . . I read further an see a Grandpa, a Great-Grandma and a smattering of uncles/aunts.

This doesn't exactly answer the question, but I hate the names Bailey and Kayla -- despite having met young people with those names -- because my mom has had dogs named that.  I always envision those people as perpetually dumb golden retrievers, and I feel really bad about it.

  • Agnes,Alice,Edith,Olive,Hazel,Ruth, for girls names I always think old lady. Peter,Ronald,George,Louis, for boys I think seem older.
