Just wondering what is normal... I had my glucose test yesterday and he scheduled me for another U/S in 2 weeks to see baby size etc! I am thrilled to see her again but wondering if I am going to end up paying for it.. Probably have to call my insurance but this is my 5th U/S... He did one in the beginning to make sure it was an actual pregnancy, a freebie after that, one when I had some slight bleeding at 16 weeks and the 20 week one... So far my insurance hasn't billed me for any of them? Just wondering if most people have this many?
Re: How many U/S have you had?
I lost count....
At least 15.
I've only had two...the dating u/s at 9 weeks, and the a/s. I'm not going to get another one, unless something goes wrong..
A lot of insurance companies will pay for them as long as they are medically necessary, but I would call just to be sure. You don't want to have to end up paying out of pocket, and they don't really NEED to do another one, just to see how big the baby is.
- A dating ultrasound at 8 weeks
- Nuchal at 12 weeks
- A/S at 20 weeks
- Check up at 24 weeks
- Check up at 28 weeks
- Fetal Echo at 30 weeks (tech checked everything else too)
- Biophysical profile at 33 weeks due to bleeding/PTL
- Had one this morning, just a regular check up
So eight. Insurance paid for all of them. I'm not high risk (at least not until the PTL). The Fetal Echo was because there are some heart problems that run in my family; baby checked out great at both the A/S and the echo.
I think some doctors just do more than others. Maybe certain insurance plans are more willing to pay for them, or some doctors are more willing to find reasons to justify them. I think it is very reassuring to know that LO has been looked at so often by doctors.
I've had 5 u/s so far...2 of which were elective.
8 weeks - To date the pregnancy
16 weeks - I had 2 elective scans to determine gender...baby wouldn't cooperate the first time
20 weeks - Anatomy scan
25 weeks - Fetal echocardiogram
3- NT scan, anatomy scan, and a fetal echo because of an abnormal measurement at my NT.
I've had 4, but only because LO is uncooperative. I had to redo both the NT and the A/S because they couldn't get all the measurements/shots they needed.
I'm probably more of a special snowflake though, as I'm in Ontario, and our provincial healthcare only covers "medically necessary" stuff.
I have a complicated history, so today was #7 and from this point they will be weekly until baby arrives.
I think a normal pregnancy with no complications would only have the 20-week u/s.
I was high risk for about the first 12 weeks-ish. I've only had 2. My original at around 7 weeks to see baby and date my pregnancy and my 22 week a/s. I don't know if anymore are planned for me or not, but so far at 35 weeks I have only had 2.
I think it can depend on your Dr and what their normal practice is as well as how you are progressing. If you had bleeding or issues, I imagine they would do an u/s to see how baby is doing. Or if you are high risk for various reasons, I could see them doing more checks on baby.
Mine experience will not be anywhere normal for this topic... I get an u/s at every single appointment... I had one at... lets see here... 8, 12, 14, 17, (18, 19 and 20 for peeks for gender, since he was very shy) 24, 28, 30, and will have another at 32 weeks next wednesday... then after that, I start my weekly appointments, and will get one at each of those as well....
oh, and another one at an ER visit at 10 weeks, then another one in my trip to L&D at around 27 weeks...
I got very VERY lucky for this one!!!
Mine are all covered 100% if they are for a medical reason. I have had a ton b/c of spotting in the beginning and then contrax/shortened cervix in the second tri. I think I've had like 11 or something.
At the practice I go to, for uncomplicated pregnancies, they do one at the first appointment (7-8 weeks), the anatomy scan, and then a growth scan at ~ 36 weeks. Plus the NT scan if the patient wants it.
I had one at 8 weeks, 12 weeks, 20 weeks, 26 weeks, 32 weeks and I will have another one by 38 weeks.
As long as your doctor shows it was medically necesary your insurance should cover the ultrasounds.
I'm a special snowflake because there's always one. I had 18 with DS and I'm on track for 22 with this one.
My insurance has paid for all of them since I'm high-risk with both pregnancies.
I once had a picture until the trolls showed up.

I've had 5 and my 6th one will be 3/13. I'm 35 and have a velamentous cord insertion to the placenta. It's not vasa previa, thank God, but they want to keep checking to see if the baby is growing properly.
-One at 9 weeks to see the heartbeat
-NT scan at 12 weeks
-Anatomy scam at 17 weeks
-Growth u/s 29 weeks
-Growth u/s at 32 weeks

Might have one more before EDD of 4/6. YAY for babies!!!
Well let's see...our first was at 10 weeks, then our second was at 21 weeks when we found out the gender and today I had my third at 32 weeks! 4lbs, 2 oz.
At least twenty. I'm getting them weekly from here on out.
Had two with my RE before I was transferred to the Perinatologist at 8 weeks. My Peri does them at every appointment, plus NT Scan, got a level two ultrasound at 20 weeks, got an extra one for bleeding during second tri, got two extra ones when I had symptoms of PTL.

Just 2 and I don't expect any more unless God-forbid something happens or the MWs can't tell what position she's in closer to my EDD. Since I am going through a BC, though, it's possible that I get fewer US anyway (although I've been told that only having 2 is pretty normal).
