I know that many of the women on this board have had children before and I was looking for some advice. My DHs best frind and his wife had their baby today. What were some of the best gifts you received? We were thinking about a gift card and we don't know what's more helpful.. Walmart, target, baby's r us, etc. Any thoughts? Thanks!!

If you want to go the gift card route, find out if she's registered anywhere and get it for that store. Babies R Us are good because of the coupons and registry completion deals, but they're expensive overall. I guess it depends on whatever's local and convenient for them. For me, BRU or Target would be best.
If you want to get them an actual gift, I LOVE my "Ultimate Crib Sheets." They are sheets that snap down onto the crib, so if the baby has a blow-out or leak in the middle of the night, all you have to do is unsnap the sheet and snap a new one on. No fumbling with the bumper or the mattress in the night. Get 2 or 3 of them, they're the best. It may not seem like a fun gift, but trust me, the parents will appreciate them when they are sleep deprived ;-)
Diapers and wipes were sooo appreciated! Ask if they have a preference on brand/size.
Dishwasher rack thing for bottle parts.
Swaddling blankets, sleep positioner, Moby wrap.
Also, maybe consider doing a meal train to provide them dinners once they are home. mealtrain.com

Baby BOY!
I feel like most women have gotten the essentials that they think they will need by the time the baby is born, but a gift card is always nice for later.
After DD was born, I received a pampering set from Whole Foods, with stuff all for me. I lovvved it.
Gift cards are great. Like others have said, you always find that there are things you need.
As well, my some people brought over dinners and that was awesome! I filled my freeezer before I had DS but it was so nice when people brought over a fresh meal.
Always check the registry, but if they've registered for a bunch of stuff you know they'll never use...these were my faves:
A Boppy pillow, whether the baby is breast or bottle fed, these are a godsend!
If she nurses: disposable nursing pads, I LOVED those (especially the medela ones)
Soothie pacifiers!
The Fisher-Price Space saver high chair...DS is 2.5 and we still use it, it converts to a booster https://www.target.com/p/Fisher-Price-Space-Saver-High-Chair-Geo-Circles/-/A-11699696
The Fisher-Price take along swing...DS loved it much more than the big swing The one we have is similar to this:

I know it's been said, but gift cards are great, and meals are incredible.
In regards to WHERE to get the gift card from -- it depends on what's local and where they shop, but like a PP said - see where they're registered. If you get a gift card for a place they're registered, they can usually get some completion coupons and use it to get stuff they didn't get or they didn't realize they needed when they were registering!
I haven't had a kid yet, but my best friend just had a baby three weeks ago. I made her two casseroles that freeze up to a month and she can just throw in the oven for an hour and voila, an easy meal! When I am a new mom this is something that I would really love...I hate cooking dinner as it is and I would imagine when you're sleep deprived, recovering from delivery and caring for a newborn, easy meals are a Godsend.

Target gift card and homemade food that we could refrigerate and reheat, aka casseroles.
A healthy snack gift basket, freezer meals and gift cards. Those were definitely the best gifts.
This! Or I would say a BRU gift card if they registered and still have open items remaining on the registry.
If you are not into the gift card thing, I personally loved getting the cute outfits, even though many others will be getting them as well, you always use them, especially the onesies!
Home cooked meals are great! Just make sure it is something that they eat, you don't want your time/food to go to waste if it is something they don't eat.
It's hard to think of the perfect gift because we all are saying 'oh, we loved this...' but you never know what you'll want/need until afterward when you get to know your baby. Swaddle blankets were a godsend for DS2, but DS1 hated them KWIM?
Ditto on the meals - that was priceless! Also, honestly, having someone come over and insist that I go take a nap/shower/eat whatever I wanted while they watched my baby would have been amazing and I would have been eternally grateful.
As for tangible gifts for baby, anything off of the registry. Since they already had their baby though, prob a Visa gift card or one to Target/wherever they're registered.
