3rd Trimester

Weight gain worries

I'm at 31 weeks and have gained a little over 30 pounds already, but at every check-up the doctor tells me my belly size is right on target.  Should I be worried that I am gaining too much?

Has your doctor said anything about your weight? I think it all depends on your size in general. At 35 weeks I've gained about 40lbs and my doctor isn't concerned. I've always been semi-petite and my OB feels comfortable with me gaining. But, I think it all depends on your health and what not. If he hasn't said anything, I'd bring it up if your concerned.

  • He hasn't said anything, and honestly I've felt kind of timid bringing it up, but I will ask at my next appointment.  I appreciate the response.
  • I've gained 25lbs by my 24 week appointment (I wasn't underweight to start), despite trying to eat healthy and being fairly active in the first half of my pregnancy. Sometimes your body just gains... My belly size is also exactly on target and my MW tell me not to worry about it every time I stress about higher and higher numbers, but it is hard not to when so many girls on TB only seem to have gained 10 so far, or 12 so far... I guess as long as your weight gain came naturally and wasn't caused by eating junk all day every day it's just meant to be!

  • I am 31 weeks also.  I have only gained 9lbs but my belly is measuring a week ahead.  My doctors aren't concerned with either.  I say if it's worrying you then you should bring it up.  Otherwise I think your doctor would bring it to your attention if it was an issue.   Sometimes it's just easier to ask and ease your mind! :-)
  • If your doctor says you're fine, don't worry about it. If you are eating right, limiting desserts and other high calorie, low-nutrient foods, and exercising (even walking around the block), you're will gain primarily baby, not fat from here on out.
  • Honestly, I would not bring it up if they are not saying anything.  I did. And then was incredibly upset because I have gained more then they would have wanted to see.  He told me though the are suggestions, and as long as you and the baby are healthy, there is no need to worry.  But he would have liked to see me gain less.

It upset me because I was already obsessing about my weight and was doing everything I could to keep the weight gain in moderation.  Them telling you you have gained too much when you are doing all you can anyway...What good will that do you?  Just keep eating healthy, do light exercise, and be confident you are doing everything right at 31 weeks.  Some women gain tons, which I DO NOT think you have.

I am 32 weeks and have gained 34lbs.

    Good luck.

  • I am pretty close to the same weight gain as well. In my first pregnancy I constantly worried about how much weight I was gaining and weighed myself every day. I ended up gaining a total of 43 lbs and was induced at 41 weeks. I did have a lot of swelling as it was Aug, but the good news was that I dropped all the weight within 6 mo of having DS. I breastfed and I would walk and try to do the elliptical for 30 min at least 3 times a week at a very low setting.

As long as your Dr's aren't terribly concerned I would just try to keep a fairly healthy diet (I love candy), so you have to have some give and take, but honestly the weight will come off and the key is being healthy and strong for baby. GL and try not to stress too much!
