pumping at work question...

How many of you that pump at work do it in the bathroom.. I kind of feel like that is a dirty place to be doing that.. Is it just me, am I being paranoid or should I ask for another place to pump... Thanks..

  • I would not pump in a bathroom.  I'm a teacher and I pump on my planning period and at lunch.  I use my classroom and lock the door.  I also wear a cover just in case.  I would ask for another place.  Your employer is required by law to provide one in some cases that is sanitary, private, and not a bathroom stall.

  • No I do not pump in a bathroom nor would I.  That's just not clean, or right on your employer's part.  I pump in my office with my door locked and everyone knows when the door is shut they don't even bother me.  My co-worker came to my floor and pumped in an empty conference room with the door locked.  We're blessed with very understanding and accomodating bosses though.  Yours should be more so!

  • Ask for another place to pump!  I have a private office, but there is no way you should be made to pump in the bathroom.

  • That's what I thought, my only problem is that I am subbing.. And I feel like they will say if you have a problem with that, then don't sub.. I'm just trying to keep a good name BC I do need a permanent job.. Not that I'm putting sanitary issues over a job.... Do I still have rights?

Have you asked if there is another place?  You are probably not the first person to need a place to pump. My school told me there were plenty of offices, conference rooms, etc. that are empty throughout the day and I could use them if I didn't want to use my room.  I'd find a female secretary and ask her if she knows of any places that have a lock that you could use.

  • Yep, I pump in the bathroom - and it's very much no big deal for me, it's a clean place, I wash my hands, no problems.

If you're uncomfortable with it though, I'd totally just bring it up. It doesn't have to be a huge deal - if you're subbing, there's probably an empty classroom or a back room somewhere in the school with a door that locks. I doubt you're the first woman ever to need to pump there.

  • Just because you are a sub does not mean you can't ask for somewhere else to pump.  I highly doubt you're the first person to need a space.  And honestly, I'd be pissed if they told me no just because I wasn't a full-time employee.  IMO this is something that falls into common courtesy, whether or not they are required by law.

  • Depending on the size of your employer, they are legally obligated to provide a mothers room that is NOT in the bathroom.  I would tell them that they need to find another place for you to pump, preferably an office where you can lock the door.  My company has a small lab at a different location, and we put blinds and a lock on one of the conference rooms for the nursing moms.

  • I would not pump in the bathroom either, but it was definitely an awkward conversation to have with my single, male boss. Even now if there is a meeting going on in the room I use, I have to wait until they are done. Sad

  • I don't know about in Texas, but in CA, it's required by law that every employer provide women with a safe, clean, lockable place to pump. It's illegal for that place to be a public bathroom. My friend Lisa (who's fro Texas lol) brought her son to work with her everyday until our employer set aside a pumping space for our staff.
