I prefer it for a boy but think it is nice on a girl too. I would spell it Avery no matter what - don't change the spelling, it doesn't make it more or less for one sex.
I think it is okay on either sex, as long as you give her a middle name that clearly shows she is a girl (ie not Taylor, Morgan, or another name that is used on both or, worse, primarily boys ie Ryan). I really hate the spelling Averie though. Changing the ending doesn't mean it is more feminine, it means it is spelled wrong and she will spend her life correcting people.

I actually thought it was only a girls name. I've never heard it as a boys name....only girls...but it seams as if its the opposite lol! Either way I wouldn't change the spelling.
This post makes me so sad.... dh and I loved the name Avery for our boy until people continued to comment endlessly that it is a girls name. I wish I had made this post in the beginning of our pregnancy because this is the first time that I have heard so many people agree that it is a great boys name. Oh well maybe next time

Boy.
I wouldn't change the spelling for a girl, though.
This.
Avery is a boys name
Averie is stupid and being stupid does not make it a girls name.
...I'm in a mood about this topic today.

I think of it as boy-turned-girl. No longer unisex. If I see the name Avery, I assume it's a little girl.
Don't spell it Averie. That's stupid.
I don't love it for either but if I saw "Avery" on paper I would assume girl. It's much more popular for girls these days.
Please don't change the spelling. She'll be correcting people her whole life.
Girl, with the spelling Avery.

Exactly.
Proud Mama to cleft cutie
That is stupid. It looks like someone misspelled ovary.
I see it as both, and like it equally for either sex. I've known both boy and girl Averys. I do not care for your altered spelling, however.
Yep, me too
I think of it as a boy's name. I hate the changed spelling. It looks like a made up name. Please don't do that to your daughter.
Used to belong to the boys, but IMO its girls only now. If I see it or hear it I immediately think girl. Only spell it Avery.
Its on out list for girls as Avery Marie Elizabeth.
agree
I have a niece named Avery Grace so I'm all for it as a girl's name.
I agree with everyone else, spell it with a y.
