Vehicle Advice

Baby #3 will be here soon and we are considering a larger vehicle (drive Chrysler300 now).  Looking for advice on vehicles for a family of 5 with decent gas mileage.  Some of the SUV's I was looking at only get 13MPG, that will simply not do!

 Thanks in advance.

Re: Vehicle Advice

  • We just traded in my beautiful 2009 Dodge Caliber for a 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan Stow n Go. DH was too tall for most vehicles to get a car seat in. It is a great car so far!

A good friend, family of 5, has the Honda Pilot and really likes it.

  • I was just looking at SUV's this morning.

I like the GMC Terrain and it gets great gas mileage but no third row.

The sorento, traverse, arcadia and the cadillac all get decent gas mileage. My girl friend just bought a new acura SUV and loves it.

  • We just got a Volvo XC90 for this new baby; we also have a Volvo XC70, which is the wagon version.  I love both of them.  In the XC70 we get 20+ miles to the gallon, and the XC90 (the SUV) usually gets just under that (around 18mpg).  Both are spacious enough for a family of five, but the XC90 has a collapsable third row, which is nice for when we have family members visiting.  I love both our Volvos; they're very safe and make fantastic family cars.

  • The GMC Terrain (similar to the newer Saturn Vue that was produced) is nice. They don't have 3rd row seating though if that's what you're looking for. And as PP said you can't go wrong with the Honda Pilot. My doctor has one and he LOVES it. It's his 2nd one to be exact.
  • Best minivan gas mileage - 2011+ Honda Odyssey  (2 or 3 mpg better than competitors)

SUV - 3rd row, look at the Pilot, or the Hyundai Veracruz is really fantastic (has average mileage though, 18ish)

  • I test drove a Kia Sorrento before I bought my Kia Forte - it handled just like a sedan (I had never driven an SUV before, I was expecting it to handle more like my FIL's truck), really smooth ride and excellent gas mileage.  We only went with the Forte because the payments would be lower and given that this is our first child, we don't "need" all of the extra room.

  • I would absolutely go with a minivan (Sienna, Odyssey or Grand Caravan) and not even think about getting an SUV.

A three row SUV would be a waste of space and money since there is little to no storage space behind all third rows that I've seen.

You could do a 5 seater SUV or cross-over and have them 3-across. Don't bother with a Rav-4, Escape or CR-V, they're too narrow to do 3 across comfortably in my opinion. A Hyundai Santa Fe or Ford Edge has enough space for sure to do that though. Those are the only ones I know for sure based on my research.

  • The reason I'd go with a minivan over an SUV is because you're totally winning with the minivan having generally better gas mileage, no huge swinging doors to deal with in parking lots (especially important when the kiddos are getting themselves in and out of the car), better storage capacity and more leg/head room.

  • I was determined to NOT have a minivan, so I made DH interview all our friends who have kids to see what they drive. EVERY SINGLE SUV OWNER I talked to said they would rather have a minivan and that will be their next vehicle. SUV's (as much as I LOVE them) just do not pack as well as a minivan.

  • Dh and I just bought an Outlander it's really great. It has a fold down 3rd row of seats so you can have it folded down so its flush with the floor for extra storage or up as seating. It is super roomy and as a plus I normally get car sick I do not in this car

We love our Ford Edge. The second row of seating has tons of room, even for adults, and the trunk is huge.  We can comfortably fit our two larger dogs (both around 50 lbs) and a stroller in the trunk.  The gas mileage is pretty good too.

  • We just got a Mazda CX9 and absolutely love it!

  • I just bought a new Honda Odyssey and I'm getting an overall average of 21mpg combination city/highway.  I love this car!  The new body style includes a middle row where the seats spread apart so you can fit 3 car seat across and still slide the seats back and forth to access the third row.

  • We're looking at the Toyota Sienna and the Highlander (regular or hybrid). The Honda Pilot is similar to the Highlander as well.

That all said, we are doing the minivan because of all the storage as well vs if we need to use the 3 row in the SUV.

  • We have a Hyundai Touring and love it. Handles nicely, has good cargo space in the back and great gas mileage. It's also affordable. It's our third Hyundai and we've been really happy with all of them.
