Recommend the best no cry sleep books for 12+ mths.

Alasdair is killing me. He nurses all day and night. I don't want to wean him, but he is up nursing (mainly in our bed, but he will sleep parts of the night in his crib) every 10-40 mins all night and at least once an hour during the day. As I'm typing this he is screeching at me, pulling my shirt and poking my breast screaming "that." Crying

Most of the books seem like they are all or nothing. I just want to help us all sleep better and cut down on some of the night feedings. If you have read a book that you think would help us, please please list it/them.

  • I'm strongly considering night weaning by the Dr. Jay Gordon method. I'm really tired. And I'm growing tired of being tired.

Otherwise, I've read No Cry Sleep Solution, but didn't really see any improvements from trying it. Ferber's book remains the most helpful to me, I'm afraid.

  • We're not 12+ months yet, but we're in about the same boat here. I've read Ferber, Weissbluth, No Cry Sleep Solution, Baby Whisperer and Sleepless in America and nothing has helped. I do think Ferber has a lot of good information that has nothing to do with CIO if you haven't read that yet. I'm thinking of trying Jay Gordon's nightweaning method in a few weeks. I also came across www.babysleepsite.com on a blog the other day, where her "personalized sleep plan" was highly recommended.

  • I have read Ferber a few times, but gave my copy away a few months ago. I guess I was hoping that someone had a book we haven't tried yet. Sad

I did it, or a variation of it, and it worked for us. I was really tired of not getting more than 3 hours of sleep in a stretch at 13 months. I have recommended it to many moms. I did it after the NCSS had some successes, but not enough.

    I like hearing success stories!

I'm not sure I can hang in to 12 months; that's when I go back to work and I feel like I'll be better able to deal with a week or two of no sleep before I go back. I feel like we've tried the two extremes (Ferber and NCSS), while this one is sort of middle of the road - like "expect some crying, but you don't have to stand outside and just listen to it".

I want to try this, but DD is in her own crib, and he doesn't say what to do if LO just freaks out and doesn't go to sleep, because I imagine my child doing that. I have tried to send in DH and she screams like a banshee until I go in and give her boob.

I have heard from friends that did Jay Gordon method before one year that it works.  I'm thinking of trying it myself when we hit 11 months.  Even just to cut down on night nursing, we are up every 2 hours.  Ferber was a disaster.  Nobody slept for 4 days.

  • We've done the first 2 nights. The first night was bad - I was up a lot, but I restricted nursing to 4 minutes. Last night was better - I only nursed him twice between 11 and 6, and it was 3 min/session. He went back to sleep pretty quickly afterward.

My DS is in his crib. I think the idea is with this plan that you don't have to leave until baby is asleep. If they're upset, you comfort (first the boob is an option, then holding, then only in the crib). That's the thing - you can't really night wean until you're ready to not use the boob as your only method of comfort. It IS the easiest method, so it's okay to admit you're not willing to give up that tool.

It's been easier than I thought so far. He's actually accepting cuddles in place of feeding/sucking.
