Boy names suck

I was sooo set on Sunday Rose and now that I'm having a boy I can't find ANY boy names I like. Yes my thing says Roman but I'm not even sure if I like that anymore. I seriously want to cry...I know I have time but I have looked at so many names. It's not that they are bad but I just feel they are all so boring and so common.

Sorry I just needed to vent.

Re: Boy names suck

  • Everyone in my family has complained that the boy name we picked and are SET on (Jack) is too common.  I choose to look at it this way though: yes, girl names are pretty and fun, but a lot of boy names are strong.  And I'd rather my (potential) son have a strong name that will hold up when he's a man, than a name that was unique or fun.

FWIW I think Roman is a wonderful name for a little boy.  And it is a name that will hold up strong when he is a man.

  • I just have to tell you that I love Roman because I grew up watching Days of our Lives!! :)  Hang in there, you still have lots of time to decide!

  • I feel your pain!!! My problem is not finding names I like, but picking one out of the many names we like :( we had finally narrowed it down to either Holden Russell or Braxton Russell and then our original name Titus Alexander came back into the mix. We are just so torn and I want our name picked out now :( Good luck!

Just wanted to say, as an English teacher and former English major, I am in love with your choice of Holden.

  • I agree with this. You should pick a strong name. My husbands name is kip... he hates it. He goes by his middle name.

  • Get in line lady, I have to choose 2 first and 2 middle names for twin boys. So far we only have Louis Willem (not asking for feedback) which is a family name. HELP!

  • I'm having the same issues with boy names.  Also, we had Roman on the table briefly.  It has since been removed, but I still love it.  I know what you're going through!! Luckily, we still have time before our LOs arrive.

We're naming our son Jack. If it helps with your family, it was ranked 44th for boys name in 2010 and peaked out at around 38th a few years ago so it's really not that popular. Some of the more commonly mentioned names on here are ahead of it (like Brayden, Gavin). I agree that I like a strong, classic name.  If it is popular it's because it's a cute, great name!

I think their issue wasn't so much it being popular or trendy, but just generally common.  They think it's boring.  I felt like saying to my aunt, who originally kind of turned her nose up at the name, "I'm going to set up an appointment with Jack Nicholson and you can tell him how boring his name is" LOL.

  • I felt the same way until this pregnancy, but I'm having a lot of fun and have found a lot of names I like. Have you tried www.nymbler.com? You can type in a couple names you like and they'll make recommendations based on those. Also on baby name wizard you can enter all kinds of criteria, so if you want something more unique that's one of the filter options.

You may have saved my sanity - nymbler is officially getting my vote for most useful website of the year.

  • I found boys names more difficult too. We have one that we both agree on but DH was doubting it at one time. He actually wanted the name Roman, which I love, but my cousin is having a boy in January and naming him Rowan. So, we nixed it because it was too similiar. You will find something you love, but I think Roman is great.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. We skipped "popular" names with my DS's for names that are more timeless, classic, and will hold up well if they're 38 and the owner of a company.

  • There are some boys names that DH or I liked but had to rule out for one reason or another... Felix, Xavier, Zander, Gavin, and we are still debating Wesley if used as a middle name. Any of those possible names for any of you that are having trouble?

  • Our baby boy's name is Gavin Joseph...Joseph is a family name but we just really liked Gavin and it was one of the few we actually agreed on that really stuck. The problem we found with boys names is they either seemed really common, odd or too trendy, or DH simply didn't like it...I know Gavin is in the top 100 but hopefully won't get TOO popular since we didn't want an uber trendy name. Maybe you and DH should each make a list separately of names and then see if you have any similarities?

  • yeah boy names are super tough. My son I knew what I wanted to name him for ages and ages before he was even conceived so that wasn't a problem, but I had a super tough time trying to find a name that fit if this one was another boy. Luckily we dodged that bullet!

  • Ah, sorry. I feel the same way about girl's names. Nothing grabs my attention. FWIW, Roman is great. It's strong and not overused. I bet it will regrow on you.
