I know/ know of two baby girls and one on the way with this name, and I just don't get it. I don't find it attractive, appealing, sweet or anything other than a cocktail garnish.

Yeah, I don't really like it either. Yet I like "Oliver" for a boy; why is it that I like Oliver but not Olive when they're basically the same? It's weird, but like people said you seem to just have names you like or you don't for no real reason.

Exactly.
And I love Olivia and Oliver. Olive is a cocktail garnish to me.

1.) I hope none of the people you know who have named their daughter's Olive post on TB. I'd be a little peeved to see someone bash my kids legitimate name.
2.) I like Olive. I prefer it 100x more than Olivia. Andplusalso, it's not Nevaeh, which gives it brownie points in and of itself.

Greek names are rising in the ranks, and with the populairity of Olivia and Oliver, some namers are looking for a different-but-same kind of choice. I like it personally. So....I suppose I shouldn't extend the olive branch? :P

As long as she's not bashing anyone's kid, it's okay to have a good name vent every once in a while. If this board can't be used for that, then I'm not sure any place is safe. I don't agree with the olive hate, but that's the beauty of the board. All kinds.
I love Olive. It's quirky, sweet and spunky... all of which I'd take over pretty or cute anyday. It was a strong contender for this LO, and will likely be the name of a future daughter, if we are so lucky.
Olive is NMS. A few years ago I was talking with a lady about what her DIL wanted to name their granddaughter----olive. Grandma was trying to think of nice ways to tell DIL why not Olivia when her husband (grandpa) said all the boys are going to be saying " who stuffed olive". Ha every time I hear this name this is all I think of!

I agree with this and what other ps have said - why like any name? It is legitimate. I agree that Olivia is kind of too girly girl for me and I like Olive as an alternative. It's a sweet name. Now if it was a made up name that was suddenly trending - I'd understand wondering why, but this is a legit name that has been around for some time and is becoming more popular with the increasing use of older names... that's why you're hearing it more often.

I agree with this. She's just saying it isn't her taste and doesn't really understand it as a name. Olive is NMS either, but I certainly wouldn't raise an eyebrow if someone used it--definitely a legit name.
Every name posted on here gets negative responses. I've posted about Jonathan, Isaac, etc. and someone always has negative things to say. That's cool, that's why I ask about a name.
I really dislike the name Olive and do not understand why someone would name their child a name that is a food. I don't care if it is a legitimate name, I eat olives and would never want my child associated with something you eat. I think there is nothing cute or classic about it. But that is just my opinion.

I think it's so sweet!
I wanted DD to be Olive, but we went with Olivia, at DHs request.
I'm not fond of it either. DH's grandmas name is Oliva, Why not Olivia? (Oh-liv-ah), I don't get that either..

I don't love Olive, and I prefer Olivia, but there are worse. Like everyone else said, it's personal preference.

I actually like both Olivia and Olive, but I would use the latter before I used the former. You asked why, so these are my reasons:

I absolutely love Olive. I think it's sweet and spunky and fun.
Abs...???
I think Olive is adorable and spunky. I'm so over Olivia. It bores me to tears.
But I don't care if you don't like it. Whatever floats your boat, lady.
