3rd Trimester

For those of you who had a membrane sweep...

I almost 40 weeks and my doctor gave me a membrane sweep today. I am currently 2 cm dialated and 80% effaced. Well ever since she did the membrane sweep I have been having spotting, cramps, more contractions, more bowel movements etc...

She said this sometimes does the trick with first time moms. Did this trigger labor for you?  Im hoping this works within the next few days. She said at my next appointment we will start discussing induction options. I hope this membrane sweep works, did it work for you??

  • My mom had it done with all 4 of her kids when she was overdue, and she went into labor within 24 hours of it each time. She didn't have it done til she was  41 weeks though.
  • I had it done after 40 weeks with DS, and was in labor the next morning. I had it done before 4 weeks with DD and it did nothing. A friend of mine just had it done after 40 weeks and was in labor that night. It can work if you're ready, but I think success is higher after 40 weeks, especially for FTMs.  If there's no need to induce you, then you can request another sweep or two  in the next week or two. And they say if it'll work it works within 24 hours.

  • 2 of my last 3 friends were long & closed at an appt and either the dr poked too far or he or she attempted to strip their membranes but they both went into labor that evening... hopefully the same goes for you!

  • I had a sweep done when i was pregnant with Connor (40 weeks along and I was 4 cm at the time). I went into labour with him 4 days later and had spotting, cramping leading up to that.

  • With DS I had it done, and went into labor the next night. With DD, she did it 3 times (!) before I finally had an induction at 41 weeks, 5 days.

  • I was stripped at 39 weeks d/t impending pressure for induction (gestational diabetes). I was 2cm, 80% effaced. I spotted and cramped all night afterwards and went into labor the next morning. She was born 36 hours after stripping.

  • My water broke about 2 hours after I had my membranes swept but I was already leaking a little bit of fluid.

  • I had my membranes swept yesterday too. I'm 40weeks4days, 1cm dilated. I had spotting/mucus/blood but it has slowed down/stopped by this morning. Not really contracting, so I'm waiting until I'm induced Friday as I don't know if I'll go into labour on my own.

I think membrane sweeping works if your cervix is thinned and ready to go. If you aren't ready "down there", then I think it just causes spotting, etc.

Sounds like you're ready though! Good luck! :)

  • I had it done at 39 and 40 weeks. It didn't do anything for me, but I didn't have any progress. I ended up with an induction at 40wks 4 days.
