NTR- anyone switch insurance carriers while pregnant?

MIL currently watches DS1 while DH and I are at work, and we're expecting DS2 in the fall. Due to health conditions MIL informed us that she can't watch both kids. DH decided it would be best if I stayed home with the kids. That being said- I was thinking of giving my notice before DS2 is born, and switching to DH's insurance during my 3rd tri.

Anyone else done this? Any horror stories or did it work out for you?

  • I would make sure your OB and hospital are covered by the new insurance.

  • I went on Cobra in the middle.  MAKE SURE all of your I's are dotted and T's are crossed because I almost lost coverage due to a small mistake and it was a MAJOR problem.  I had to go on guaranteed issue after Cobra was up because my husband decided to work on his own and csections are considered "preexisting" basically all it means is that my premium is higher...

  • I found it fairly easy to do. Just make sure you keep ALL documentation in case something comes up. I agree with the others, too, that you want to check to make sure your OB is covered with the new insurance. I am not sure if all insurance companies are like this but I could not enroll with my new insurance company until coverage from my old insurance completely ended. I tried to get the ball rolling early so it was one less thing I had to worry about, but the new insurance company would not even really talk to me until I had paperwork from my husband's old company stating that our insurance coverage ended. Hope this helps!

This exactly. It was a bit of a pain because my ultrasound was scheduled for the first week that I no longer had coverage with my old job and we didn't have the new insurance set up yet so that was annoying, but it was covered and they actually sent us a refund because without the plan info they mis-estimated our out of pocket. I even had a letter from my old employer saying that coverage would end on x date and the new company still wouldn't do anything until after that date. Good luck but technically it's completely allowed and should work fine.
