Questions about fighting a cold while pregnant.

I started having a slight cough and congestion on Thursday.  I was hoping it was just allergies.  My symptoms have gotten worse every day.  Yesterday my cough was extremely mucousy.  I slept horribly last night.  Had pains in all of my sinus cavities on the right side of my face (throat, nose, eye, head).  Now today my cough is dryer but I can barely breath out of my nose.  I know sudafed, tylenol cold, and robitussin are all okay to take.  Should I try to ride it out by taking those to see if any works or should I go to my doctor?  I don't have a fever but am thinking the way things are going I will have one soon.  Is it very dangerous to have a cold while pregnant?

Re: Questions about fighting a cold while pregnant.

  • I'd give your OB a call and see what he or she says as to what to take, when, and how much.  Your OB can also relieve your fears about getting sick while pregnant.

I just got over a cold, which was followed by some viral infection.  For the cold I relied heavily on my humidifier at night - really helped me to get some sleep and decreased my overall congestion.  I also drank a lot of fluids and took it easier.  For the viral infection (complete with fever) I used tylenol, fluids, and rest.  My goal was to ride it out without taking anything other than tylenol unless it got monster bad.

  • If i was you, just to err on the side of safety, i would not take anything and just ride it out. You are not suppose to take any of the liquid stuff. i think tylenol is okay to take but i would ask your doctor.

I was in your same situation a few weeks ago. I drank some tea to help my throat (caffeine free tea) but i did not go overboard with it. You seem like you are a little bit worse than i was though. I pretty much took tea for my throat, and then i made sure i minimized my activity for a few days and made sure to lay down and get a lot of rest. It took about 4-5 days for it to be almost completely gone.

Ask your doctor if you are unsure though. Good luck.  :)

  • My Obgyn gave me the ok to take any acetaminophen-based cold medicine (I used Tylenol cold  daytime for two days) and it helped. I was just told not to exceed the dosage.

Of course, only do what you're comfortable with. Feel better! :(

  • I just had a wicked cold.  I took tylenol to relieve the headache, which was the worst part, and slept with my head more elevated than usual to help my sinuses drain so I could breath while sleeping.  While the other medications were safe, they don't help get rid of the cold so I decided to just ride it out if possible.

Unless you think you have some type of infection or virus, I wouldn't bother with my OB (that's just me).  There's no cure for the common cold so, unless you'd like them to recommend what cold medications to take to help with your symptoms, there's not much they can do.

  • It's not at all dangerous to have a cold while your pregnant, but it does really stink. Trust me, I've ended up with two sinus infections this time around (one with pink eye even) and a plain old cold. My doctor has me wait it out for a week to see if it's just viral. If you have green mucus and it lasts more than a week, it's probably an infection and they'll give you an antibiotic. There's really not much you can do other than take the little medicine you can, get sleep and drink plenty of fluids. Good luck!

  • I was REALLY sick when I was only 12 weeks along.  I was terrified for my baby and for myself as I have asthma too.  I had a fever, body aches, congestion, sore throaght, and vomitting too.  It was a nightmare!!  I didn't know what to do.  I went to the Dr. at urgent care and they refused to do anything to help me because I was pregnant.  I was livid!!  I went home and just did what I could with half doses of tylenol (for the fever) and liquids.  It finally went away, but I was beyond miserable the whole time.  Turns out.. after doing a little research that I should have been considered high risk by the doctor and admitted for observation overnight.  I called and complained about the lack of treatment I received.  So I say... go see the Doctor and make sure they understand your situation and help you in anyway possible.  Generally being sick will not harm your baby... but fevers can get tricky.  So if you have a fever over 100, don't chance it.

  • This was me a little over a week ago.  I thought I had a strep and went to a walk in clinic one night.  It was negative and she told me to keep hydrated and take tylenol.  Then things just got worse - cough, sneezing, stuffy nose, runny nose, sore throat...couldn't sleep at night.  It was bad.  This was on a Sunday so I went to a different walk in clinic and he said my ears were really red - he gave me antibiotics - I was feeling better 3 days later!  Doesn't hurt to go to the doctor.
