Cloth Diapering

Freaking out.....

My DS is almost 5 weeks old so I know I have a little longer to wait to use my cloth diapers, but I'm starting to freak out about using the CD's.  I'm so used to sposies now I can't imagine switching.  And now that he's here...I'm starting to doubt my understanding in CDing.  Please tell me others have had a little nervous break down about switching to CDs.  I have an awesome stash started, and I'd hate to have to sell it all because I'm scared!!!  Help!  TIA

Re: Freaking out.....

  • Why do you have longer to wait? What are you waiting for? What kind of diapers are planning on using? My baby hasn't come yet, but I plan on CDing from the beginning so I'm curious about your experience.

  • I bought BumGenius and Flips and you usually can't start using those until DS is around 15 pounds.  He's still much too small to fit into them.  I have a couple friends who use BumGenius and absolutely LOVE them and both told me that they freaked out before they switched over too.  Just looking for some tips/advice for switching over.

  • We used disposables for about the first week or so while we got our bearings straight and it was a little intimidating to make the switch to prefolds and covers so I understand where you are coming from. But really, the intimidation factor is greater than the reality of cloth diapering. It took maybe a day of working out the kinks but after that, it's been smooth sailing. You will be fine. Good luck!

  • My LO is 5 weeks and is still too small for most of my stash.  I only have a handful of CDs that fit her so she's primarily in disposables.  I can't wait until she can fit more of her CDs because I hate spending money on sposies just so they can be thrown away.  The only thing I'll miss about sposies is the stripe that turns blue when the diaper is wet, however, K usually lets us know when she needs to be changed.

  • Also, have you had any blow outs in a disposable? You probably won't have them in cloth. That should help you make the switch.

(And here's a shoutout for prefolds and covers for those waiting for their one sizes to fit...seriously they are super easy to use...so easy and trim in fact I'm not really jonesing to make the switch to OS yet...)

  • The intimidation factor is high before you start using CDs.  We didn't start using them until DD was a month old, not my original plan but that's how it worked out.  I was very nervous at first but just decided to go for it.  Really, that's all you need to do, just bite the bullet and start using them.  It's much, much easier once you start CDing and it will all make sense, I promise.
  • You will be fine! I started CDing after 4 months of disposables. It's a little tough at first getting used to it. And there's no rule that you have to start as soon as your LO fits - you can take a few months to get into the swing of things and then start. Or you can do it part time. Or, if it's too much, you don't have to do it at all! But don't be afraid to give it a try. Once you get used to it, it really isn't so bad. I know it seems daunting when you have a newborn but I think once you get into a rhythm, adding the diapers into your routine isn't such a big deal.

  • We had a newborn stash so we started CDing right after we got home from the hospital. To be honest, I had already spent the money on CDs so I just jumped right in. I can see how it can be intimidating and it definitely involves a learning curve (at least it did for me) but now that we are 3 months in, I can't imagine NOT CDing. My advice would be to jump right in and give yourself a few days to work out the problems and issues you have. It will get easier and you will figure out what works for you. Plus, the ladies here have so much knowledge on the subject and are willing to help. Good luck!

We started using BG OS around 9 and 10 lbs (2.5 mo or so for us). They were bulky but worked fine.

I love them. So much less stink from the diaper pail compared to disposables.

  • I don't get what there is to freak out about.  The kind you have will work pretty similar to disposables.  Put diaper on, take off, throw in pail.  The only difference is that you throw them in the wash instead of in the trash, and then put them back in the dresser instead of running out to the store for more disposables.  Easy peasy.

Also, my DD fit in BG's at about 10 lbs (2 months old for her, since she's small.)

  • 1. Take a deep breath.

    2. When you change baby's diaper next, instead of grabbing a disposable, grab a cloth one.

    3. When LO is wet or dirty, change just as before only don't throw the diaper away.

That's it! Nothing to freak out over. PROMISE. They're just diapers. :)
