Hi. My 31weeker is now 36. We're still in the NICU, but have a question about this summer. My sister is getting married on June 2. We had planned to fly, but now I'm worried about germs & contact w/ so many people. DS will be 4 months (adjusted age 2 months).
Our alternative is driving. It's about a 10-12 hr drive (w/o an infant).
What would you do?
Re: Flying w/ baby?
We flew with our 24 weeker when she was 2 months adjusted, in the middle of RSV season. We made sure to keep a blanket over her most of the time and avoided large crowds--i.e. sat in a corner when we needed to eat.
There's also nothing wrong with telling strangers, "I'm sorry, he's got an immune issue and we can't let strangers get too close to him."
I think this depends on your level of comfort and your preemie's health concerns. We drove from TX to MO with our 27 weeker when she was 2 months adjusted last summer because we were not comfortable with her on a plane in close contact with people. But our doctors told us not to take her into public spaces for the first 8-10 weeks after discharge so we were being very careful.
The driving trip wasn't as awful as I thought it would be. She slept a lot, I rode in the back seat with her a lot to keep her happy. We took turns going in to gas stations, food, restrooms. I BFed in the truck. It was slow-we had to stop every 3 hours to feed her and then hold her for 30 min because of reflux. We did it two days.
Our precious girl, born at 27 weeks.
