I already have back issues and hear that nursing stools can help out to make you position yourself correctly to avoid back pain. Have people found them helpful? Are they easily substituted by the ottoman that goes with your glider? TIA
I always propped my feet up on the coffee table or sat in the recliner with my feet up. I used a boppy (or other pillows would work as well) so I could make sure my back was supported. One thing to be sure of is to bring your baby to your breast, don't lean into baby. That does hurt the back!

Yes, yes and yes. Put your feet on something (an ottoman worked well for me) and as PP mentioned, bring baby to your breast so you won't be leaning over. That hurts the back.
I nursed my first DD for a year and never used a nursing stool or had back issues. I just made sure to sit in a comfortable position while nursing. I did use the ottoman that went with my glider and the ottoman that goes with my couch. It all depends where you plan to sit. If you plan to primarily use a chair (like a rocker) with no foot rest, a nursing stool might be helpful .
I used the ottoman that goes with my glider. I am sure any stool that is a comfortable height for you would be just fine. I would also just sit indian style on my couch and nurse.
I think it really depends on your build. I have a long torso, and a nursing stool didn't bring my legs up high enough that I wasn't doing a significant amount of lifting DD anyway. I found the best thing to be a pillow on my lap, and I frequently had my feet on the coffee table as well.
Also, when possible, I nursed in the side-lying position, which removes back strain altogether.
Do not spend the extra money on a special stool. Just use and ottoman or a table, I used teh $10 kitchen stool most of the time, and it was perfect, and cheap! And I could hide it in a cupboard. As pp mentioned, just be sure not to lean into the baby, use teh boppy or pillow or breast friend to bring the baby into you.
Some gliders come with breastfeeding stools that are built right into the the ottoman, others do not. I think it depends on how much you are willing to pay for a glider/ottoman combo with a stool built in.

I bought a stool for my first on, b/c I found it on clearence (the medela one) at Burlington Coat Factory for 99 cents (I know crazy!) I would think a step stool or ottoman would work fin as well.
I loved my Medela nursing stool- kept it for this go around as well! It was only like, $20, and I just found a glider I liked that didn't come w/ an ottoman.
Since you already have back issues, I'd strongly recommend getting a nursing stool. (You can always try to find one used, although they're not that expensive.) The difference between it and an ottoman is that it's tilted to help your legs get into the right position. Our sofa ottoman was nice, but for marathon nursing sessions, the nursing stool made a world of difference for my back and shoulders.
Re: ? for those who have breastfed
I always had my feet up...stole, ottoman, table!
