There are the obvious pregnancy no-no's: alcohol, cigarettes/drugs, cliff diving, bull riding, etc.
The two that are obviously up for debate but still make me pause: deli meat and peanuts.
I'm a big fan of Aleve but now know I need to avoid it for my headaches and body aches.
Have you come across anything that you never thought you'd have to avoid - because it seems harmless?

Confused on this one.. fish is one of the best things you can eat for baby! Avoid high mercury fish, of course, but most fish is completely safe and very healthy.

I'm still eating both peanuts and deli meats. I had just never heard that they were even a debatable not-good-for-pregnancy food.
Don't know if this counts because it wasn't during pregnancy, but...
I had to avoid milk, tomatoes, or tomato sauce while breastfeeding. The acid in tomatoes gave Jack bad diaper rash (no pizza or spaghetti for me!). He had trouble digesting cow's milk (spit up a lot).
Yeah, some fish you should avoid all together and there are some you should limit to once or twice a month, but fish is pretty healthy for you.
I'm not really avoiding much of anything. I don't eat very unhealthy, I'm not a drinker/smoker/do drugs, I rarely take medicine (though with the yo-yo temps we had, my knee could have used an Aleve). If I want a Subway sandwich, I'll eat one, but I don't eat them every day. (They do sound really good though.)

"A new baby is like the beginning of all things--wonder, hope, a dream of possibilities."
hmm I guess I never thought of this one, when I pregnant with DS#1 I was up in a deer stand hunting, with this one I won't be considering deer season starts beginning of Nov and I am due Nov 1.
"A new baby is like the beginning of all things--wonder, hope, a dream of possibilities."
I still eat a tuna sandwich 1-2x weekly. Up to 6 ounces of skipjack (light) canned tuna is considered perfectly safe for pregnant women. If you prefer albacore, the recommendation is up to 3 ounces, due to the increased mercury levels.
I never thought of this...have you talked to your doctor about it?
MH just got a new deer lease and is begging me to join him but now that I hear this...
Why aren't you eating feta?
It amazes me how many people put no critical thought into the blanket statements on what things to avoid. "Soft cheese" poses no risk to pregnant women. The risk lies in listeria, a bacteria that can be common in unpasteurized soft cheeses.
Same with sushi. Pregnant coworker was eating an avocado roll last week, and another coworker made a comment about how pregnant women are supposed to avoid sushi. CW responded with, "Oh, I wasn't aware avocados and rice are dangerous to my fetus."
"A new baby is like the beginning of all things--wonder, hope, a dream of possibilities."
Man, this is exactly why I posted this question. So I could learn things like this.
I know what I'll be researching tonight...and adding to my list of doc questions!
Right? But they are just all over me lately. I heard it's because the fetus's heartbeat is similar to that of a female flying squirrel in heat. Crazy stuff.
What about Jedi flying squirrels? Are those safe?
Well I've always known about this but... Sushi. I love sushi. I love sushi more than I like any other food in the world. And to be honest, I still eat sushi once in a while. I have so many Japanese friends who have sushi as a staple in their diet, as in every day, and they never got sick from it while pregnant, neither did their mothers, etc. Before I was pregnant, I probably had sushi 2 or 3 times a week.
I think its a precaution that they give, but when you've got horrible nausea and the only thing you're craving is sushi, its becomes worth the risk for me!
I love you.
Mine is green tea. I had no idea you had to avoid green tea. Is it true that it saps your body of folic acid?
WTF to both of these. I honestly can't tell if these are serious responses.
When I was pregnant with my second in 2008, an article came out that said pregnent women with diets high in soy could affect the fetus since soy acts as an estrogen in your and the fetus' body. However, I don't think most Americans eat nearly enough to get an effect. I think it was an animal study that showed developmental issues of males who were born to pregnant moms who were served a high soy diet.
I do know that my mom used soy during menopause to alleviate the symptoms since it does act as an estrogen in your body.
Shrimp is also like tuna...it's one shellfish that is usually higher in mercury. So not eating it every day is good since mercury can bioaccumulate.
After I say all this, I haven't avoided anything and even had a drink of beer/wine for major events during each pregnancy.
...baby #3 is here...
Crotchless panties. Man, they are my favorite undergarment, but the snail trail is just so bad.

Shrimp has the LOWEST levels of mercury of any seafood
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercury_in_fish
I think you guys got bad information somewhere??
Yes, extremely high levels of soy can have negative effects, but I doubt the PP had, like, five pounds of edamame daily before.
As far as shrimp, they are not like tuna. Mercury builds up in seafood over time, thus large, long-lived fish such as albacore tuna and sharks end up high in mercury. Shellfish like shrimp are generally not at risk for high levels of mercury.

So what's safe? Some types of seafood contain little mercury. Although concerns have been raised about the level of mercury in any type of canned tuna, the FDA and EPA say pregnant women can safely eat up to 12 ounces (340 grams) a week. Similarly, the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend 8 to 12 ounces of seafood a week for pregnant women. That's about two average meals of:
Not all researchers agree with these limits, however, citing a study that noted no negative effects for women who ate more seafood than the FDA-approved guidelines"
So these are conservative guidelines that say it's absolutely safe for pregnant women to have two servings of these seafoods weekly.
Whyinthefuckinghell would you not eat peanuts???
This is straight from my dr. I am going to challenge him on this now!
Dairy.
I am lactose intollerant, but really bad, and indulge all the time. But lactose intollerance+me being pregnant = me being violently ill.
I was told that wearing rubber gloves while scooping the box was fine.
