Clubfoot

A friend of mine just gave birth to a baby who has one clubfoot. I'm not sure what to say to her because I know she was very scared about it being a possibility after an US. Now that she's given birth and the baby is a week old I'm not sure how to comfort and support her.  Any suggestions?

Re: Clubfoot

  • More than anything you as a friend can do, you need to congratulate her on her baby.  Don't ignore the foot if she mentions it, but she still needs to here how wonderful it is that she's got her baby!

So many times, moms of special needs babies aren't allowed or able to just be thrilled in the fact that they have their baby!  No matter what, your friend loves baby, so rejoice!

And when she wants to tell you about baby's foot, and the process they'll go through, listen and ask questions.  That kind of friend is worth a million!!

  • kristie yamaguchi (sp?) was born with club foot and she went on to win an olympic gold medal and dancing with the stars!! She has 2 daughters i think and has had a very successful life. Maybe that story will comfort your friend? I'm sure you can find it somewhere online.

  • My niece had a clubfoot.  SHe is totally fine.  She had to wear a brace for a year when she was a baby.  She is 5 and I acutally just found out it was a club foot.  I didn't realize back then - hopefully the same will be for your friend!
  • My son was born with a cleft lip/palate and a club foot. Everything was a surprise to us when he was born. Like other people have said the best thing you can do as a friend is to be there if she wants to talk about it and celebrate the fact that she had a baby. It was difficult when people focused on the things wrong with my baby instead of celebrating his birth. My son is 7 months old and he had to have a cast on his leg changed once a week for 3 1/2 months. He also had to have a surgery. The surgery is normally a minor surgery but my son's was at the same time as his lip repair for his cleft lip. He now wears shoes with a bar on it and we are told he will have to wear them for 2 years. His foot should turn out pretty normal but his club foot will be smaller. If you or your friend have any questions please let me know.
