Success after IF

If your LO(s) have had serious stranger anxiety...

I need someone to make me feel better.

Braley and Jack (but more so Braley) have intense stranger and separation anxiety.   I know it mostly comes from the fact that I am a SAHM and the fact that they are twins means I can't take them that many places.  So most of their time is spent at home, playing with me.

We do gymboree once a week, and most of the time, Braley has his thumb in his mouth wanting to be held.

When people see I have twins (boys, no less), I think they assume that I am chasing them every which way, they are all over the place, in to everything, won't sit still, etc. etc...but that couldn't be further from the truth!  They don't leave my side!  In public, I can honestly say that they have never ever left my side.  They are both grabbing on my legs, arms up in the air begging to be picked up.  Crying hysterically if I am out of their sight for a second.  So I can't pee at gymboree, even if my husband is there.  I just can't leave their sight.

Okay - all this to say, They start MDO twice a week in June, then in August, they go to 3 days.  I am dreading it with every fiber of my being.  How on earth are they going to handle that?  This is going to be so traumatic on them, I can't even describe.  They lose their sh*t when our nanny comes (but calm down pretty fast, as she tells me) and that is just once a week for a few hours, in our house.  With no other "strangers" there and they have the comforts of their own toys, cribs, etc.

Ugggh.  Please tell me your child had major stranger anxiety and you were able to take them to daycare/MDO and they ended up loving it.

  • When DD was right around that age, she had major stranger anxiety.  It was all about mommy, and I'm not even a SAHM!  I don't think it will be as traumatic for them as you think it will be. Even when DD would freak out around strangers, or the people at daycare, or even her grandparents - she'd freak out for about 5 minutes, and then she'd be fine.

  • Hadley has recently developed into a total mama's girl.  She freaks if I'm not in sight and only wants me to hold her.  She's even given DH the snub.  I have no idea where it came from cause she never has acted this way before.

With all that being said, she goes to daycare twice a week and it's no problem at all.  Some mornings she cries when we leave and others she is perfectly content playing.  But...she always ends up having a good day and loves it there!

I bet once the boys are acclimated to MDO, they will do fine!  Especially since they will have each other.

That is my hope!  I had first thought about separating them, so they can learn to socialize without each other.  They are attached at the hip!  But I figured that would be too traumatic and I can worry about it later.

Yeah, I would definitely worry about that later.  Our girls start out in the same room in the morning since we get there so early and not all the teachers are there yet.  I think it helps them both to have each other right off the bat and then they are fine separating when the other teachers and kids arrive.

  • Aw hon I'm so sorry. DD has major separation anxiety and I know how hard it is. It's both heartbreaking and extremely frustrating! It sounds like you're doing all the right things. All I can say is I hope they outgrow it soon!
