so i'm 36 weeks and my boyfriend found out yesterday that he has mono. the doctor who told him it said i have nothing to worry about because if i do get it, the baby won't be affected. well one of my very pushy friends seems to think otherwise. she immediately bugged out and told me that if i get it, my daughter will die. do i need to quarantine myself away from him or will i be alright? i cant imagine the thought of leaving him to take care of himself during this. it would break my heart.

Re: Mono...
Mono is extremely congatgious. I would contact your OB and see what they have to say and not necessarily rely on second hand information from a doctor who is not treating you.
I had it in highschool and it was awful. I ended up losing a lot of weight (like 20 lbs that I really couldn't afford to lose) because I was unable to eat because my throat was so sore and swollen.
I had a rather nasty case of mono in junior high. I actually spent a solid week in the hospital with every type of test before it was diagnosed. My doctor said I could have gotten it from someone coughing in the grocery store. The old "kissing disease" is really a myth.
Mono is highly contagious, however, some people have built up immunity to it before they know they're exposed to it.
It's a viral infection that's pretty nasty. It's spread by saliva and other means, so I would assume you have been exposed to it if you have even so much as kissed him. After a month of having it ususally will test positive on lab work. There's nothing anyone can do to help the virus go away except let it run its course and treat symptoms.
I had Mono when I was first starting college for nursing. I got it from someone at school. 3 other people got it too. It was awful! I thought at the time it was the worst pain I had ever felt, but I know it wasn't...it hurt to move, breathe and to function.
Most people have had Ebstein Barr Virus (what typically causes Mono) by the time they're adults. When you get it as a young child, which most people do, it only seems like a cold. The older you get it, the worse your symptoms. Thus, why those of us who made it to our teens or twenties suffered so much. There are blood tests to confirm you already had it, and statistically, it's likely you have. You could have even been shedding the virus and given it to your SO.
That being said, some Mono is caused by Cytelomegalovirus (CMV). That is a virus that can cause serious complications in pregnancy and fetal complications. I would want to confirm how your SO was tested and which virus it is. And of course, call your doctor and let him/her know all this.
