Trying to Get Pregnant

Any runners out there?

Hi, gang!  I'm new to this community and to this process... Glad to have a place to go to vent/ask questions since we're kind of keeping this on the DL.

Any runners TTC out there?  I'm training for a half-marathon (3 weeks from now) and I'm a little worried that my race falls about 6 days after O.  Am I worried for nothing?  I run all the time - the doc cleared me to run, but I'm still antsy.

  • I'm a runner, currently training for a triathlon.  I don't think you have anything to worry about racing at 6 dpo.  If you do get pg that cycle, it will most likely be before implantation (and therefore any pg symptoms, which is a bonus).

Definitely keep up running because if you plan to run while pregnant, you'll want to have it as a regular part of your exercise regime.

    GL in your race!

  • You'll be fine. I ran a lot when I was first KU with DD. I was actually signed up for a marathon when I would have been 3 months...my doc gave me the ok as long as I stayed extra hydrated, but I didn't run it because my morning sickness was so bad.

  • You'll be fine.  If you're already a runner it's good to keep it up. The month I got my BFP was actually my highest mileage month that year and I was able to run up until 36 weeks with him.

  • I haven't run in awhile due to a groin injury (had left inguinal hernia surgically repaired in Dec), but my sister is currently around 22wks PG and she still runs. She's in the army so is very fit. Her OBGYN cleared her for running as well. She ran a half-marathon when she was around 7 or 8 weeks PG (and ran regularly during her BFP cycle as well). Running shouldn't affect O or implantation for that matter. You should be fine!

  • That's awesome that you're doing a half marathon!  I do mostly 5ks myself.  My doc said it was totally fine to keep running even after I get pregnant, just to not push it too much!  Good luck to you on your race!

  • Hubby (who is a family medicine resident) is completely ok with me running high-ish mileage while TTC.  As long as you've been doing it, it shouldn't be a problem to keep doing it.  He just suggested that I don't try and push myself too much harder than what I've been working at.  (ie don't make crazy jumps in your mileage or try to greatly increase your speed)  Obviously he isn't an OB or anything, but I trust his opinion.
  • Good luck with your half! I prefer ten milers. Those extra three seemed to last forever.

  • I ran a lot when I was first pg with my daughter.  I was signed up for a race when I was 7 weeks but didn't do it because I had started spotting.  It turned out to be a hematoma (not caused by running), and DD was fine, but I was just being extra cautious.

Running in the first tri was SO hard for me!  It felt like 25 lb weights were tied to my ankles!  Hopefully you'll have more stamina :)

  • You're a runner-- there shouldn't be any problem. For a good read, try "Exercising Through Your Pregnancy" by Dr James Clapp. Short synopsis: the physiological basis for why exercise is awesome for your baby. :-)

  • I run - my doctor's advice was to keep doing what I'm doing. As other posters have mentioned, whatever your body is already used to is perfectly fine to continue throughout pregnancy (barring any other issues of course). However, if you're only used to 1/2 marathons pregnancy is not a good time to train for the Ironman : )
  • Thanks, gang!  I knew you'd make me feel more at ease.
  • Thanks!  I'll have to check that one out.  I'm super-paranoid about getting out of my healthy exercise habits, so any reminders that it's good for the baby is fantastic!
  • Good point about the morning sickness - maybe not such a bad thing it didn't work out last month!  Thanks!
  • Trust me, if I can do it, you can!
  • Wait, these don't go directly under the comments?  Oops.  Newbie indeed.  Sorry, guys!

Ditto the other ladies. My bff got KU and literally found out days before our first half. We ran it together, nice and slow but she has a healthy, beautiful baby now.
