Cloth Diapering

Wow, once you go cloth (wipes)...

You'll never go back!  I'm amazed.  We've been using cloth wipes for a little over a month.  Our DC was initially reluctant to try cloth diapers, so I didn't even broach the subject of cloth wipes with them, and I just provide disposables.  This morning, I changed his diaper first thing when we arrived at daycare, and had to use the disposable wipes.  AWFUL.  Took me like 37 wipes to get him clean, and then there was the whole issue of what do I do with the (huge pile of) garbage wipes separate from the wetbagged cloth diaper...

Love love love cloth wipes.

That's all :)

  • Glad to hear your opinion! I'm debating using cloth wipes when my LO gets here, but I haven't made my final decision yet.

  • Cloth wipes are awesome. Not only do they work better but I can STAND the scents on those disposable wipes.

My family is a Foreign Service family. Families like mine are posted in every corner of the globe. We live our lives away from family, friends and the conviences and comforts of home. We often live and work in dangerous places among those that misunderstand our intentions and purposes. Sometimes members of our ranks sacrifice our lives to further diplomacy.  Please remember that we serve too. And I'm always open to questions.

  • Yup! I can clean the worst messes with just a few wipes, and I'm not shelling out money for something that gets thrown away.
  • Do you guys buy yours, or have you made your own?

Which brand do you all prefer, OR any good tutorials to make your own?

I made ours, but only because I had an abundant number of baby washcloths and cheap flannel receiving blankets.  I just sewed them together, one side flannel, one side washcloth/terry.

But, they're very inexpensive to buy too!  If I were going to buy a stash, I'd probably look to etsy for some cute ones.

  • I made mine also. I have some single flannel (which is nice for just pee) ones and also double sided flannel. They are nothing pretty to look at but they get the job done and that is what counts :)

  • I got double-sided flannel ones and others that are one side flannel, one side terry, both from Etsy. So cute and only like $1 each. I am not very crafty, and even if I were, I don't think I would have the patience to go shop for 15 different prints, and I don't think mine would have turned out as cute (not that that really matters, but whatever).
  • Do yourself a favor and go pick up a cheap pack of baby washcloths from Target. That's really all wipes are, you don't need anything fancy.
  • I made mine, and I'm a beginning sewer.  They were super easy to do.  I waited for flannel to go on sale at Joann's, then bought some cute prints and some solids, cut it up while watching tv before bed, and sewed as I had the chance.  I also did burp cloths this way, with cloth birdseye flats in the middle that I picked up at TJ Maxx on clearance. The only thing I wish I had done was wash the fabric before sewing because it does shrink.  Nothing shrunk so much it was unusable, I just wish I had known.

Sorry on a mac and can't make it clicky.  I used this tutorial and made like 20 wipes from 2 yards of flannel (that was on sale for $4 a yard).  It came out really cute and was super cheap and easy.

  • I totally agree!  We went away last weekend and used disposables and I hated it.  The wipes were way too wet!  FWIW - I use wash clothes.  I picked out specific cloths so they don't get mixed up.

  • I just use the cheapy washcloths from Target or the Spasilk ones from Amazon and they work great (less work than making my own too).

  • We haven't used ours yet, but I made the "tricky" (not really tricky at all!) ones from this site:

    https://www.myhappycrazylife.com/make-your-own-cloth-wipes/

Mine are flannel front with terry back.  Flannel was 50% off and terry 40% off (w/coupon) at JoAnns.  Probably cost me about .50 each to make them, and I made the 8x8 ones.  Lots of hand coverage Big Smile  DH thinks they are the coolest thing ever and can't wait to use them, lol.

A much more crafty friend of mine said to definitely preshrink the fabrics before cutting and sewing.  I threw my fabrics in zippered pillow cases (one for flannel, one for terry) to help cut down on fray, also the crafty friend's idea.

  • I learned this last night!  We have been using disposable wipes since we started, but we ran out last night and it was too late to go to the store.  I had bought a pack of 30 baby washcloths for $2 at a recent consignment sale to try to use as cloth wipes, so they've just been sitting on my dresser waiting to be used.  I mixed up a little impromptu solution and it took 2 wipes to do a job that usually takes about 6 or 7 disposable wipes to do.  Wow!

Seems like every other day I'm discovering something awesome about CDing - I so wish I had done this with my first!

    This! They're the absolute best!

I got this tip from another Bumpie -- cut up old polo shirts to make wipes. They won't fray around the edges, and one side will be textured. I bought two XXL men's polos from Goodwill for like $4.00 and have more wipes than I know what to do with! lol. And they work great, I LOVE them!
