Registering early??

Do you think 15 w 2 days is too early to register?

I will be going shopping with a friend next Sunday. We are going out of state shopping and we will be in the same town as a Babies R Us.

I was wondering if you ladies thought it would be too early to register? I will wait on my other two places (Walmart & Target) but since its a little bit of a drive to any of the Babies R Us around us I would like to go ahead with that one.

Re: Registering early??

  • I personally woudln't register that early. By the time people actually go to buy stuff, a lot of it could be discontinued. I have been putting things on a "wish list" just in case. If it's still available when I go to register, then I can add it to the registry. If not, I'm sure I'll find something else

ETA: You can always do your registry online for BRU, I know it's not as fun as in the store, but since it's farther away, it might be beneficial.

    I married a ginger.

  • I don't think so, I am already registered at buy buy baby, babies r us, and target. The only person who knows about it is my mom, so I can have her look at it and see if i should add or change things.
  • Personally I find it too early but everyone has their own feelings on it.  I plan on waiting until 20wks before I start, although I have started a wish list for products I am picking between so that they are easier for me to look through and compare..

  • I don't think it's too early. Most of the gear/furniture/bedding/bottles etc offered are the same for years. You can also rearrange things online if something you register for in the store does become discontinued.
  • I don't see a problem with it. We started ours already, but we haven't shared it with anyone. I wanted plenty of time to change my mind, read reviews, etc. I think it's too early to share it with others though, because I know I'll add/delete alot over the next few months!

I think it helps though that we are on Team Green, so we aren't registering for a ton of boy/girl items, only the big things.

  • I don't think it's too early. Just because you register, does not mean you have to tell people! What I would do is take a good look at things while you are there to touch/test/see everything and then file it away to register online at home! It's very easy to set up! But it sure does make a difference to be able to see it in person. One of the strollers I was looking at that was deemed good for short people...yeaaaaahhh...not at all! Plus, I am one of those people who needs to feel the materials in the stroller, bedding, carseat, blankets... ;o)

  • I don't think it's a big deal.  I "accidentally" started a registry weeks ago.  (Basically, a thread here led me to look at pack 'n plays online, which led to the discovery that Graco makes a whole line of Mickey Mouse-themed products.  I registered for them so that I wouldn't lose track of them.)  I look at our registry as a wishlist... I certainly haven't directed anyone to look at it.  You can add/delete from it whenever you want.  If/when anyone decides to throw me a baby shower, I'll certainly revisit it to make sure nothing's discontinued and to make it more complete/balanced.
  • I wouldn't do it this early for two reasons, first if you're finding out the gender you won't know it yet to register for gender-specific things and also they still have a lot of summer seasonal things out that won't be available in Dec and Jan. when people are trying to buy them for showers.

If you really want to register now just be sure you ask a sales person if the things you're choosing are available year round.

  • One of my friends who has three children (her eldest is just going into school) offered to grab dinner with me one night after work and then go help me start to register.  Since this is our first, I think it will be really helpful to have someone else's help that actually knows what is worth it and what is a big waste of money.  She's also a pediatric speech therapist, so I'm thankful that she can help me pick out all the best stuff for nursing/feeding etc.  So, I will be starting to register whenever she is able to get a babysittter for her little ones, when that happens depends more on her schedule than mine.  Also, most of my family members (all of my aunts and uncles) are over the age of 45, and they bought things from my registry for my wedding and am guessing some will continue to do so for this baby when I do get around to starting it up (as a few have asked me about it already), I'm not sure why people over the age of 45 wouldn't know how to use a registry?
