I know I'm going to sound like a total creeper, but where do you live? If your not comfortable sharing the city you live in, the state is good enough! What do you love/hate about where you live?
We currently live in southeastern Wisconsin and we are in the process of selling our house. We want to move out of state and cannot agree where to move to, but we know we want a change! I have been google searching as much as I possibly can to try and find a new safe place to live and raise our family (I know it sounds ridiculous to google where to live, but I don't know how else to start)! I figured if I asked all of you ladies, I would be able to get some real life perspectives on the different states.
So if your comfortable sharing, where do you live and what do you love/hate about it?
Re: If your comfortable sharing...
I live in Northern Virginia right outside of DC. I love that there are so many free things to do (our zoo and all our museums are free) plus that there's so much history here. It will especially be great when Caroline gets older.
I hate pretty much everything else about it. The traffic is horrid, everywhere just feels crowded, the cost of living is ridiculously high. The people are strange too- everything is about where you work, what contacts you can give them, who you know and how much money you have. Seriously where do you work is the first or second question out of everyone's mouth after meeting someone here.
I live in Mobile, Al.
I know a lot of people think we are backward freak rednecks down here but it's not really like that for the most part. Now don't get me wrong we do have our freaks and our rednecks.
I love being here with family and the weather. It gets hot in the summers and cool in the winters, but never COLD. The lowest it has been this winter is like 21 and that was just one day. I live less than 20 miles from the closest beach.
I hate how close minded the people of the south can be. And the hurricanes. Those suck. I have to say that riding out Katrina was pretty scary!
I live in Plano TX. I moved from Baltimore MD when I got married. I love this town and will never ever move, unless it is to Frisco (the next town over). It's so so so much better than Baltimore.
Lots of large corp headquaters means plenty jobs.
Low cost of living
No taxes
Great public schools
Lots of shopping
And most important...voted America's safest city by Forbes
Well, I'm not going to help you much. I live in Minnesota. If you're looking for a big change you probably aren't going to want to move to here! haha. The only change you would get is what I assume is a more populated downtown area and maybe less farm country. Maybe. I'm in the suburbs so between that and the twin cities is all I know!
What a fun change for you, though!
We live about an hour north of Indianapolis. I think the pros definitely outweigh the cons for us. I don't like the winters. It's cold and snowy and usually pretty miserable. However, you can not beat the cost of living. Also, we have two amazing zoos pretty close to us (Ft. Wayne and Indy) and the Children's Museum in Indy is awesome. There is plenty of fun things to do. Plus, both sets of grandparents live close. I would hate to move away from them.
I think we'll stay put.
I lived in Alexandria for a year after college and this is exactly the reason I moved away! My roommates both worked on the Hill and they and everyone else we socialized with were all about work all the time. I swear there were multiple times where I would meet someone, they asked where I worked, I told them (I did auditing/accounting for a government office) and they realized they had nothing to ask or say about that, and they would just turn away rudely. It was SO weird!
My sister lived in DC and she had a totally different social group, most of them were bartenders or did something else nonpolitical, and they were much cooler.
I live in South Central Wyoming. There's nothing much to do here, well unless you're the outdoorsy type, then there is a ton to do here, in the summer. But its brutally cold and windy like nine months out of the year. But beautiful in the summer and we have a ton of wild life.
The best things about it is that for the most part the people are friendly and laid back. There aren't many posers or snobby people, most everyone is down to earth. You just have to be willing to make your own fun here or be willing to drive at least an hour for anything fun to do(like shopping, entertainment etc.)
I live in the Twin Cities area, too! ::high fives::
I second the DFW suburbs. Weather is not bad either- our summers may be hot, hot, hot, but snow is a rare occurrence.
ETA - the other thing I hate about this area is basically everyone is a transplant. There's no sense of community, very few family neighborhoods and people take so much pride in being from wherever they're originally from, they (we) don't end up with a connection to this area.
Same. We would LOVE to move out of the area, but MH has a job that's mostly specific to DC, so it's going to be hard for us to get out.
I was actually born and raised in SE WI! Lake country area...between pine and beaver lake...Near Hartland, North Lake, Delafield. A little lake town called Chenequa.
DH and I recently moved to the Nashville, TN area. I absolutely love it. The scenery is so similar to WI, but better! Tons of woods, lakes, like WI, but more rolling hills! Plus, we have a super mild winter. The crab apple trees are already blooming here! The people are some of the nicest I have met in my life. Also, I have never witnessed such amazing manners amongst the children here. I HIGHLY recommend it!
There is so much to do as well
soooo many historic sites, homes, battlefields, etc. Such charm
also, such a fun night-life around downtown.
I should add...
No state Income tax
Super low property tax...my parents are paying 12,500 a year we pay 1200...
Lost Lilah (Audra's twin) at 26 weeks. Cause unknown. Forever in our hearts
We live on eastern Long Island, NY. It's super crowded, the traffic is ridiculous, everything is so damn expensive. We really need to move!
We live outside of Pittsburgh, PA....the area is called Brentwood but my address is Pittsburgh.
I like that there is a lot of fun stuff to do with the boys the museum, zoo, aviary, science center...all sorts of stuff. I hate being so far away from family and friends...I just feel cut off. Part of it is being a SAHM.
The activities for the kids outweighs it though. I grew up in Saegertown, PA about a half hour south of Erie, Pa. There wasn't a lot to do. Go to the park, tiny zoo in Erie, or story time at the library.
Edit- We'll most likely be moving soon. DH has done phone interviews for positions in Plano, TX, Lisle, IL, and Baltimore, MD to start. But has applied for positions in Washington state, Arizona, New York and New Jeresy also. I'm kind of hoping for Texas, as long as there is a way to keep snakes and scorpians away...lol.
We live south of Milwaukee and west of Racine in a little town called Waterford. That is so funny that you live in TN because Nashville is where DH wants to move to!
I live in Pittsburgh and I love it here, can't imagine raising our family anywhere else. I love that it's a kind-of big city, but definitely has a small town feel. There are so many different types of neighborhoods/suburbs surrounding the city, you could really find close to anything that suits you best.
There are great school districts, lots of museums, a zoo, sports, conservatory, theaters, universities, etc... It's also a very low cost of living area. It was also named the most liveable city in the US last year
ETA-the downside of the city would be the traffic at times. I live in the northern suburbs and it's not bad at all there, but I used to live east of the city & the traffic was painful to get into town at times. the city is built around rivers, so there are a lot of bridges/tunnels to contend with, and for some reason, people seem to think that you have to slow down when you go through tunnels, causing a bunch of traffic

I'm in southeastern WI too (Waukesha County, pretty close to Milwaukee County) DH and I have talked about moving out of state (he spent a lot of time in California, so the WI winters really bug him). I love where we live right now because we're close (walking distance) to the grocery store, post office, library and some restaurants. There's also a big park with walking trails, swimming pool, and play ground nearby that we go to for our walks. What I don't like... it's a little too close to busy areas. I prefer quiet country living.
Since I grew up here, I've grown pretty used to the winters and the hot summers. What keeps us here right now is family, and the cost of living being pretty reasonable.
We live in Orlando, FL. like any place there's good and bad. We live very close to disney and the area/economy revolves around tourism. We like the parks and all the events that come with it but its not the easiest place to live esp. when everyone else is on vacation.
Hardly anyone is from Florida (in this area) like the PP said, there is no sense of community. Also a lot of people move down here with wild expectations and leave a few years later. I'm originally from Boston so not native either but have grown to love the area.
**Siggy Challenge What You're Looking Forward to Most after Baby Arrives**
It looks like theres quite a few east coast mamas!
Both of our families live in Wisconsin, but leaving them wouldn't be that hard to do. Family will always be just a plane ride away!
I'm really liking the idea of moving south, even if it's only a couple states away. DH likes the snow, but I'm hoping he will agree to move somewhere warmer!
I went to WMU for a couple years and studied at HCOB before tranferring to be with my hubby at a small school in the UP (what was I thinking?!) But I agree, Kalamazoo is a rockin town, and seems like it would be a great place to raise a family.
I live in McKinney, Tx which is about 15 minutes from Plano and Frisco. And I love it here! We will probably never move, either. Like Vigurl said, great schools, shopping, and its super safe. And the recession really hasnt hit Texas very hard like it has in other parts of the country.
If there were any jobs I'd totally move to the UP. DH's family is from there originally, and his pop still has a hunting/fishing cabin near Escanaba. I'm a MI girl through and through!
Da UP, eh? We lived in the Soo and really liked it. We live in Utah now, and I miss Michigan like crazy (originally from GR). So next time you're by Bells, have a cold one for me
We live in St. Louis, MO and I love it. It gets a bad rap because it's "one of the most dangerous cities", however that's the city itself - and the not "popular" parts of the city at that. Living in the suburbs, which most people do, is perfectly safe. Well, as safe as anywhere I guess - there's always crime no matter where you live.
I like that it's a pretty decent size city, but doesn't feel overly congested like really big cities would. Plus, living in the suburbs, it seems like it takes 20-30 minutes to get to wherever you want to go. Downtown for a Cardinal's game? 20 minutes? Airport? 30 minutes.
Lots of musuems, fun restaurants and bars for adult time, great parks and children's activities for kid time. Overall, very mid-western-y with a big city flair.
I currently live in Wilmington, DE. It's ok I guess. I haven't left yet. We have tax free shopping which is nice.
Umm.... uhhhh..... Fun things to do aren't tooo far away. Philly is 30 mins, NYC is 2 hrs, Jersey Shore 1.5 hrs, Lancaster is about an hour ish. Baltimore is 1.5 hours.
I am from Jacksonville, FL. I am one of the few people that are native to FL. lol. I don't recommend Jacksonville to move to though. Unless you live around the beaches/southside area.
DH is from GR originally. There is a Two-Hearted in my future with your name on it.
Third it! We love the burbs... we live in McKinney... top 5 fastest growing cities in America.
Did I know we were neighbors??? We live in McKinney too!!
DH's cousin lives in Austin and she has been begging for us to come visit. I have no idea how far away Austin is from where you all live, but Texas in general has been on our list of possibilities. We will have to take a mini vacation down there sometime and check it out!
Born in St. Louis (Go Cards!) raised in Atlanta. I hate all of the evangelicals here (sorry if you are one). They don't believe in science and always tell me that I'm going to hell because I'm Catholic. So annoying. God forbid I believe in evolution. Blah.
Other than people being ignorant religiously, I love it! Great weather, everything is new and clean, lots of people.... I just wish we had more private schools and an actual winning baseball team!
we live in the princeton/trenton NJ area. i really love our location. we're close to the shore, NYC (We go in to the city every few weeks), a short drive to philly. i feel like we live in a safe area, our schools are pretty good. i'd suggest looking in PA (philly suburbs) if you like the area b.c taxes are WAY lower.
i grew up in Abington PA (20 min from Philly) and i loved it. i was able to commute to school at Temple, there are many many things to do in the area and the school districts in the suburbs are fantastic!
For real? That is awesome! I might move back to the midwest just for that perk!
DH is from Jericho, and I told him right off the bat when we were dating that I would NEVER move on to LI, he thought I was joking at first, now he sees my point
