Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Sleep training...so much harder the 2nd time around

With DS 1 we did Ferber and by night three he was great to fall asleep on his own. He was also already sleeping through the night on his own too. This time around with DS 2 I am having such a hard time getting myself to ferber him. He is 4 1/2 months...is a terrible sleeper and yet I just cant get myself to do it. Anyone else like this? What helped you to just go ahead and do it?

Re: Sleep training...so much harder the 2nd time around

  • We trained DD two weeks ago using a mish mash of the different methods. I just kind of took what felt right from each and went with it.

Maybe using a different method would help give you the boost to get started.

I agree though, it is hard to get going with it.

It always sounded like a great idea during the day but by the time we got to bedtime I just wanted to do what was easy.

  • I am also finding it SOOOO much harder the 2nd time. DS#2 is a way easier baby then #1 but he has always been a terrible sleeper. It usually takes me at the very least an hour to get him to sleep at night. He is still in the RNP and ends up in our bed a few hours later. He has NEVER slept in his crib and typically naps in the swing. I just finished reading The Sleepeasy Solution and found it very helpful but I am still reluctant to start. I know we desprately need more sleep but for some weird reason, I can't bring myself to start...

  • we did CIO w/ DS and it worked w/in a week.

DD however is having a horrible time not w/ night sleeping but napping.  She can't find something to soothe her.  We took away her paci b/c she kept waking up for it.  It's awful and i can't stand listening to her cry during the day when i know she's exhausted.

With the exception of your son being child number two, this is our exact situation.

  • Yes, me too.  DS was a poor sleeper and cried no matter what, so it was easy.  he got with the program very quickly.  DD can put herself to sleep just fine.  Totally threw me for a loop.  WTH do you do with that?  Her night wakings are very habitual though (based on times) and we want to phase them out, but it's SO hard to hear her cry b/c she rarely does. Maybe that's why it's so much harder this time?

  • We did it for naps instead of at night and the skills transferred over to night sleep.  It was easier for naps for us since I was at home and awake. I didn't expect it to help at night, but it did.
