Rock N Play with big sibs?

Any STMs have experience with this? We got the RNP, and I'm starting to have second thoughts about it. How sturdy is it? If a clumsy or excited 4 year old bumped it, would it fall over? I thought we'd keep it in the living room, but maybe we need something more substantial?

Thanks!

Re: Rock N Play with big sibs?

  • I was wondering this myself. I just bought one yesterday and I am wondering how safe it will be with a clumsy 90lb german shepherd bumping into it. Also, my son will surely be intrigued by it. I think I may just leave it in the bedroom next to my bed for those nights where baby is having sleep issues.

  • Good question - we have ours in our bedroom right now, between our bed and the PNP and my 5 yo DS has tried to sit in it already. Other than that, he and our 3 yo DD haven't really noticed it. It seems like it wouldn't tip over easily since it rocks, but I guess it all depends how strong the kid/pet is and how determined they are. I am going to be extra careful though when the baby is in it when the kids are around to make sure they know not to touch it.

  • We have one from DD, but not sure if we will use it this time around.

  • Hmm don't have an exact answer to your question, but I never had an issue with two 70lb dogs (even empty) and a friend is using it and has an older child and also hasn't had any issues.

I would think that it might slide across the floor if bumped, but I don't remember thinking it was inherently unstable. Honestly, I've seen swings that I would be more concerned with tipping then that RNP.

  • I'm a FTM but I don't think it feels unstable.  I have a 70+ lb very active dog but I haven't been too worried about it tipping over.  I didn't read any reviews that cautioned against this either.

I am using mine in the bedroom and have the PNP set up in the living room.

  • We used it with DD and had no problems at all. If it's bumped it will slide or do the intended rocking motion, but it's never come anywhere near tipping over. I'm not concerned with DD bumping it and knocking her little brother out, I'm concerned with her trying to pick him up out of there! RNP was a life saver though with DD, she loved it!

  • I didn't buy one because of this. I have an almost 4 year old now and he loves to run and jump so I just wrote off the rock n play as a item for moms that dont already have small children. Because I know my 4 year old will knock it over.
