earwax?

Ewwww...I know. I think DS has always had a little more than normal (I know when they've checked for an ear infection before they've said there was a lot of wax) but recently I feel like I've seen more and it's been darker, more brown. He doesn't seem to be in any pain at all, no fever, no ear pulling, not complaining at all about his ears, I just happened to notice it when he was sitting in my lap reading  a story. I know I'm not supposed to use a q-tip or anything, and I'm going to call the pedi in the morning just to ask, but anybody have any experience with this? I think the color is bothering me more than anything.

Re: earwax?

  • I have a rather unhealthy obsession with looking at my kids' ears to see if they're clean or not. I don't go digging around with a q-tip or anything though. Since I check every day, (LOL) I've noticed that the ear wax color seems to vary a lot.  DS seems to have the dark brown color a lot more than DD does, but there doesn't seem to be much of a pattern to it.  DD seems to get darker earwax when she's got a runny nose, but neither kid has ever had an ear infection.

  • I actually *do* use a q-tip Embarrassed  otherwise, it's just disgusting.  I don't stick it in far, I just get the inside of the ear and around the edges of the whole.  I put a little bit of alcohol on the q-tip, because the wax is reaaaally sticky, and it disolves it.
  • DS' wax problem is so bad the pedi recommended this liquid you drop into the ears and then the wax drizzles out. It works but the wax leaking out is so gross I stopped using it!

I have used a baby wipe to get it out, or a wet towel. You can also use these https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2735044

  • Thanks ladies! DH thinks this is the strangest worry I've had in 2+ years. Stick out tongue I think I was worried with the color that something had ruptured or something crazy like that, but DH managed to talk me back from the edge last night by reminding me that if something that bad had happened DS would not be his normal self. I will say he's had a runny nose for a few days now, so it's interesting that you mentioned that possibly contributing to the color change Agrippa. Thanks all!
