D.C. Area Babies

Long and angsty and confessiony.

So, I'm a little bit pregnant. Like, four weeks. It's really kind of bizarre, because I had bleeding that I assumed was AF last Monday (see my post in amh_navyblues post about PTing &  AF and damning my new 20 day cycle . . .) but it disappeared followed by mild nausea that hasn't stopped since*. I tested this weekend and wouldn't you know - positive. So that's all well and good until yesterday afternoon when I had more bleeding and a little bit of cramping. Kind of scary, but not ER-worthy or anything so I bundled up all my anxiety and questions and whatnot and just told myself to call the doc first thing this morning.

BUT THEIR DAMN PHONE LINES HAVE BEEN DOWN ALL MORNING.  Which is super fun considering my office has little privacy right now (temp office space with cube-like walls. I can hear conversations two doors down.) and I keep trying to sneak a call in when my coworkers seem otherwise occupied.

But wait! There's more! Despite having a mild fear of miscarriage b/c of the bleeding, I have even more anxiety. Since my tests were so resoundingly positive almost immediately and since m/s has started sooo early, I am also slightly terrified that there is more than one kidlet going on in there. This is probably just crazy talk but you would have to know how much I do. not. want. twins to understand my paranoia.

Anywho, we're obviously not spreading this news around. In fact, part of the reason I even feel compelled to write this is because I couldn't talk to one of my bffs last night to get it all out.  I trust that you all will keep this on the DL, pretty please. TIA.

*Hey brunch friends! Remember my question about cooking for a toddler when you have m/s? That was not hypothetical!

Re: Long and angsty and confessiony.

  • Congratulations!!!!!

(I thought your question yesterday about m/s and your lack of a cocktail was suspicious, but I didn't say anything. See, I can be discreet!)

It really sucks that your doctor's phone lines are down. Monday mornings are probably their busiest time! WTF. Can you keep calling, and then when the line goes through, hang up and then take a break outside to make your "real" call?

FWIW, I had really bad cramping and some spotting early in my pregnancy. It lasted for about 2 weeks, maybe longer. It was all normal and everything was fine.

  • For right now... you're pregnant.  That's what matters.  Congratulations!  I hope things work out for you.  Try not to dwell on the bleeding.  It could be the baby getting nice and cozy in there.  It could had implanted low.  A million things come to mind.  Even everyday things to us, such as chasing a toddler around, running the vacuum, moping the floors, walking, carrying laundry up and down the stairs all led to spotting episodes w/ me early on.  If its a heavy flow then I'd be really concerned.  If its like the last few days of your period, then not so much but get in touch with that doctor (do they have another office you could call?  call service?)!

FWIW, I'm one of those who bled for the first 12 weeks and there's definitely a thriving baby in there having a party.

Good Luck.  We're glad you can come share your little secret with us!

  • Congrats! I, too, wondered about the lack of cocktail, but didn't want to say anything.

I hope you get through to your doctor soon! Honestly, though, if you're only 4w, they won't be able to see anything on an u/s yet, so they will probably just have you wait and see. Not that it makes it any easier to do.

  • Oh goodness. I would keep trying the doctor's office and ask to come in for betas (the baseline blood test to determine the level of pregnancy hormone, followed up 48 hours, which will give you a picture of how the pregnancy is developing). I don't mean to be Debbie Downer but I've had early spotting / cramping go both ways. I'm hopeful that it goes the way you want it to go (healthy singleton, right?) Hang in there, keep phoning and let us know how we can support you.

  • I am amazed that you're able to keep it together enough to go to work.  I would be a hot mess.  I hope your dr's phone starts working soon & they only give you good news.

Congrats! I hope things start going more smoothly and you can get through to your dr.

As for the bolded part, high betas, fast BFPs, etc. aren't a sign of twins. Yes, sometimes ladies with twins get fast BFPs and high betas, but lots have very low betas and don't get BFPs until 16dpo and most have betas and get BFPs in the same range/timeframe as singleton mom's. So, try not to worry to much about that, although I know that's so tough.

  • First, congrats!!!  I am now officially suspicious of any and all hypothetical questions from y'all :P

I hope the docs answer soon.  It's Monday - there are probably a lot of women who've been holding on to crazy questions all morning trying to get through too.  I don't think immediate m/s vs. your first experience is necessarily an indicator of twins.  Can't subsequent pregnancies affect you differently?  (Even boy vs. girl?)

I get your twin paranoia.  I had to talk DH down with T when he kept hoping for twins to get having two kids over with.  Twins do run in my family.  After seeing him stressed with one infant, I could NOT imagine him/us coping with two at the same time.

  • Congratulations!  I also had cramping really early in my pregnancy, and my test lit up super bright super early, like 3.5 weeks after the 1st day of my last period.  I hope your doc picks up the phone soon!

  • UPDATE: Finally, finally, got through. I still don't have an appt. until tomorrow at 9:30am, but I think I can make it until then.

  • Congrats...like jitterbug said, there's a million reasons for bleeding so, for now, if you can, try to take a deep breath. I won't tell you to relax because i'm sure that's next to impossible ;-) I understand your twin angst (kudos to all multiple moms out there...I don't know how you all do it!) But wait until you see the doctor...hopefully they'll get you in for an ultrasound soon. Hang in there, mama!

  • Congrats!  I too doubt it is twins.  I was so much more sick so much faster with Molly I was sure there was something different (gender, multiples) but it was just another girl like the first pg.

Cooking for a toddler with m/s?  Let DH do as much as possible and freeze leftovers in single servings to keep a good rotation for the toddler. I was sick the second time around I barely ate come dinner time.

  • Also, because I just realized I neglected to say this - the bleeding/cramping only lasted about an hour yesterday. Today things are a-ok, I'm just still a bundle of nerves.
  • (Tentative) Congrats!!!!!!!

I *knew* the diet coke was suspicious!

Do you have twins in your family?  If not, the chance that it's twins is probably pretty low.

The spotting is probably nothing...  I'll keep my fingers crossed!

  • I love that you're a "little bit pregnant." Congratulations! I hope your appointment goes well tomorrow!

To try to help alleviate the twin worry... ditto the above, based on my low BFP numbers, I was told that I had one bun in the oven and it turned out to be two. Hang in there!

  • Oh yes, and about the numbers - my beta numbers were pretty high - there's a beta comparison website that I checked compulsively, and mine were in the twin range. I was terrified until my first u/s when they found just one little heartbeat.

  • I knew it! I saw you ordering iced tea on Sunday and I guessed it.

No tips, but I will say when I was (unsuccessfully) pregnant, I had *no* symptoms, unlike the first time. So I would guess having m/s right now is probably a good--if unpleasant--sign. I don't think it necessarily correlates to more babies, though.

I bet if you told them about the bleeding and the positive test your doc would get you in today, though.

    Deep breaths. Congratulations!

  • Congrats!!  And just wanted to add I tested positive early and had really high betas and only had one.
  • congratulations!!

I doubt it's twins, perhaps you are just farther along than you think.

  • congrats! keep us posted!
  • Congratulations!!!  Maybe baby just didn't like pork and beans. Wink

Honestly, signs or lack of signs are really just no indication at all. So many people have spotting/cramping/ms or lack thereof and have it go either way. When you go in tomorrow, ask them to do a beta, and also check your progesterone, and ask for a follow up where they test both things again. Properly rising betas and a decent progesterone level are about the only true indicators of successful pregnancy vs. impending m/c.

And, similar to mssaint, I checked my myriad of betas against the website and I was consistently in the multiples range. I about died the first time it put me in the triplets zone! But sure enough, just one kiddo. Though "there's only one in there, right?" was the first thing out of my mouth at the first ultrasound. :)

Congratulations!!  I just wanted to say it's a really good sign that the spotting/cramping was only for an hour or so - this can be totally normal but I completely understand your nervousness!  Like others have said, there's many reasons for it.

  • Congrats!! I understand your fears, but try not to get ahead of yourself. Enjoy your  pregnancy. If it is twins well...everything will work out fine. Smile

  • Sounds like congratulations are in order!

  • Congrats!

Not to scare you, but be aware of the signs of an ectopic pregnancy.  When I had my ectopic, the dates didn't make sense,  I had a super dark line on the test, spotting and cramping.

  • Congrats! I'll add to what everybody else has said...I had severe cramping with DS until about 7 weeks - honestly, worse than any period cramps I've ever had. With this pregnancy I had exactly what you described - bleeding, thought AF was coming, then - it just stopped. Test was positive very quickly, and there's only one in there!
