1st Trimester

Going off the pill. How long did it take TGP?

Hi ladies!  First of all, congratulations to you all for making it to the 1st Tri board! :)

I'm kind of a lurker, but recently started posting on the BOTB board because DH and I decided that I will go off the pill in August to start TTC.  I know it's different with everyone, but I am just curious to hear some stories from you on how long it took you to get your BFP after going off the pill?

I'm kind of worried that it could take us awhile because I have been on the pill for a long  time and also because I have endometriosis (which is now under control after being on lupron for 6 months).  This makes me wonder if I should go off the pill sooner than we are planning..

Re: Going off the pill. How long did it take TGP?

  • I was on the pill for many years and stopped taking it in Novemebr 2011. I got pregnant at the end of December! So.. It can happen very quickly.

Good luck and don't stress about it!

  • DH and I were lucky enough to conceive the first time I ovulated off of the pill.  However, it did take about 4 months for ovulation to occur!

I went off the pill in early October.  No BFP or AF 70 days later and I went on Provera to jump start my period.  By that time I had started temping/charting/ using OPKS and confirmed ovulation 32 days into my next cycle.  10 days later, I had my BFP!

  • Went off the pill in June and got the BFP in December. It can happen the first month, but do not get down if it doesn't.

  • I was on the pill for 7 years. It took DH and I 18 months to get our BFP. My cycles were very irregular ranging from 31-55+ days. We finally were put on Clomid and conceived on clomid cycle #2! TTC is definitely different for everyone!

  • I took birth control for 3 months when I was 17 and it made me sick/crazy! So I haven't been on birth control since and it took us 13 months to get our BFP. That's just me though! Good luck to you!

  • It took about 34 months after stopping the pill for us to get PG. Hopefully you won't be anywhere near that long. GL!

  • I got off the pill a year before we started ttc. We started trying in June 2011 and got our BFP in January.

  • I stopped taking the pill in July 2011.  It took until January to get the BFP but I had to figure out my cycles after the pill.  I ended up charting and using OPKs to figure it out.

Same here.  I was on some form of birth control for 20 years, most recently the pill for the last 12.  I also stopped taking it mid November and conceived sometime in the first week of January.  As been said before, just relax and let things take their natural course.

  • We conceived in the third month off birth control.  I had been using the patch instead of a pill though, not sure if that makes a difference!  My cycles were regular from the first month off - this isn't always the case for everyone though.

Try not to stress too much!

  • I went off the pill in October, started TTC in December, and got pregnant in December (1st month).  Besides a couple of months before I got pregnant with DS, during my pregnancy with DS, and a few months postpartum, I've been on the pill since 2000.  HTH!

  • I had been on the pill for 16 years.  I stopped taking it in July 2011, we started trying in Aug 2011 and got a BFP earlier this month.  So, it took us 6 months.

You should check out the TTGP board too - those girls are super helpful with questions and support.  They'll also tell you it can take a healthy couple up to a year to conceive.  So, don't feel down if it doesn't happen quickly for you.

  • It took us 2 years to the date nearly after coming off the pill. It all depends on the person.

  • With DS I was on BCP for almost 8 years... got off in October and TTA until April... then got BFP in July!

This pregnancy I was on BCP for 1.5 years and got my BFP the first month off the pill!  We were very fortunate that I got pg right away and didn't even have an AF (other than the initial period coming off the pill)

    GL!

  • Wow!  Thanks for all the responses ladies!!!  I guess I'll just have to try not to stress too much when the time comes!...But now I'm thinking maybe I should go off the pill in June (if not sooner) just so I can give my cycle a little bit of time to regulate before we actually start TTC.  We'll see what the hubby has to say about that ;)

  • I went off the pill the middle of December and got my BFP the beginning of this month.  I was in my first month of charting, so I was surprised we got pregnant so easily!

  • I was on the pill for almost 4 years.  I went off the pill this January and took my first positive pregnancy test on January 22!  It only took us 1 try to get pregnant!  It obviously happened very quickly for us but I know many people who took quite awhile
  • The first time I got pregnant, I was off the pill for 5 months. We were using protection because we weren't quite ready to get pregnant (I was in graduate school). I went off because we wanted to try 8 months from the time I went off the pill and I wanted my body to try to regulate itself after I was on the pill for 10 years. Well...it only took ONE time that we weren't careful and BAM! I got pregnant. It was a shocker because my cycle is sooo random. We were of course excited, and I ended up giving birth a month before graduating from my master's program.

This time, I went off the pill in December and got pregnant within a month--before I even got AF. Obviously everyone is different...this was just my experience. I am very thankful that it was so easy for me to get pregnant!

  • I went off the NuvaRing in September. Charted in September, October, and November to figure out if I was ovulating and get a sense of what my cycle without BC is like. Tried in December and got pregnant. I think charting was really helpful, and it was definitely a factor contributing to our success.

  • Lurking on other boards tonight...

I went off the pill in April 2009 and was (unexpectedly) pregnant in May but that pregnancy ended up being a chemical pregnancy and we lost it.  We decided to prevent by using condoms for the month of June so that I could have at least one normal cycle and then I was pregnant for the second time by the end of that July.  At the time I had no gynecological issues that would have complicated things.

  • I was on the Pill for 10 years. It took us 10 months to conceive our twins (who we lost @ 22 weeks 4 days gestation), but I went on Metformin only two months prior to conceiving and I think that helped. After losing the twins, however, I only had 2 periods before getting pregnant this time. Good luck!

  • I went off the pill after 11 years in May of 2010, never started ovulating and was diagnosed with PCOS November of 2010 and finally got pregnant through fertility treatment January 2012. I wish I would have stopped taking it sooner so I would have realized earlier that I was going to have trouble. I waited until I wanted a baby like yesterday and it made it really hard.
  • I was on BCP for about 3 1/2 years, and then I switched to an IUD. Was on that for about 3 1/2 also. Had it taken out in October, started trying in December, and got my BFP last week. ^_^

  • Lurking from third tri, but I also have endometriosis. I stopped BC in March because it was making me extremely sick and got pregnant in early July. We weren't trying (charting, etc.) but weren't not trying. Good luck!!

  • I was on the pill for 8 years. When I told my doctor that we wanted to TTC, she recommended waiting for two months after stopping the pill (she said that after being on the pill for years it would take a little time to build up a good uterine lining again). So that's what we did... I stopped taking it in November and we started TTC in January and got pg on the first try.
  • I was on the pill for 10 years, I've had a few cyst removals from my ovaries, pelvic floor problems and all sorts of other issues in mainly in 2010. I really felt that it was going to be very hard for me to get pregnant, but everyones body is different and until you try you really won't know.

We got married July, off the pill mid August. My cycles were on a good 28 days, got a BFP in October which ended quickly. Started to temp after that (4th cycle), and now I'm 12 weeks, got our BFP a few days after Christmas, I think I was about 10 or 12 dpo.

    Good luck to you!

I personally think thats a hood idea. Get off BC so your cycle can straighten out a bit- then TTC. I'd also suggest charting, start a few months ahead of time so you get to know your cycle, and when things happen so you can try- or avoid. My 1st it took 3 months, I went off BC in May, KU in August. This one, it happened our first month of trying. Everyone is different, enjoy it, relax, and have fun. Good luck!

I'm so sorry about the loss of your twins!  That had to be so heart breaking. :(

But I am happy to hear that you are expecting again!  Congratulations!

That's probably a good idea to stop the pill a few months prior to trying..  I think I'm going to do that..  So now instead of August I will probably stop it in June.  Thanks for the advice! :)
