3rd Trimester

stretch marks

I'm having my first child and got major stretch marks. I tried all kinds of lotions to prevent them but nothing worked. Now I'm 39wks and my belly is itching and stretching like crazy. Is there anything I can put on it to help with the itching? Also, any stretch mark creams that come recommended?

Re: stretch marks

  • Cocoa butter helps some with the itch (supposedly with stretch marks, too, but as I'm only about 5' tall, there's no real solution for those with me... nowhere for the baby to go but out!)

Also if you try an oatmeal bath it'll help sooth the itching

  • Here is a little tidbit from wiki

Stretch marks or striae (singular stria), as they are called in dermatology, are a form of scarring on the skin with an off-color hue. They are caused by tearing of the dermis, which over time may diminish, but will not disappear completely.

The tearing happens in the lower dermis, creams cannot prevent them, or make them go away. As far as the itching, it's because the dermis is tearing. I rubbed baby oil, like massaging my tummy, to help the itchy feeling.

  • I use olive oil soap bars. You can most likely get them at your local farmers market. I use that while Im in the shower then when I get out I use just a basic lotion. Im almost 39 weeks pregnant and have no stretch marks or itchiness.

  • Unfortantly you will either get stretch marks or not. I got them with my first and they are growing now with my second. To help with the itch I smear baby oil gel on my belly just after getting out of the shower. I find it stays around a little longer than just the baby oil.

If it gets really bad during the day I just re-apply. ;)

  • I have been using Palmers body butter and oil every day. It seems to help a lot with the itching. Stretch marks are hereditary, so you are either going to get them or not. But regardless Palmers seems to take the itch away. GL

  • The stretch marks stink, however with my first I got really bad ones on my inner and outer thighs after about 6 months after having DS they did diminish quite a bit. They now are back with this pregnancy too, I am just hoping they do the same thing and lighten as time goes on. Cocoa Butter lotion is my go to hope you get some relief from the itching.

  • I have been using the Bella B Tummy Butter for the prevention of stretch marks.  I order it off of amazon.  I have used it since day 1 of pregnancy and have had no stretch marks and minimal itching.  It is very, very thick and I love putting it on in the morning and night.  I was afraid at first b/c of thickness that it would make my clothes stick to it and all, but it doesn't .  It makes your skin very, very soft though.

  • From what I've heard/read, it's all based on hereditary and the amount of weight you gain during pregnancy. I know we'd all love to find that magical lotion or oil, who knows if they really are working for us.
